And I would think adding Ortiz and Penny to the rotation would really help too. Get Webb for a whole season as a #3. Lucky to win 75? They should push 500 for sure. Not to mention Hairston should improve this year, being a year older and entering his second full year. Tracy should be better as well. I am guessing they will move him to 1b and let Green play the outfield. Either way he should be better since he will be 25 this year and this is his second full year. a .283 ba and 343 obp for a rookie is impressive. Hill should beging to mature behind the plate. Their offense should be fine, its their pitching that is suspect, but they have a solid 1-3 if in fact they do get Penny. And something leads me to believe that the D'Backs are not done with trades because they have seemingly a log jam at every infield position. So you have to believe they are going to make a few more trades. :mischief2

Instead of picking up these veterans, they should have stuck with the baby backs, trade johnson for a couple prospects, go low on the payroll for a couple years until they clear the debt, and then start spending. Now they will be stuck losing and in debt for years
December 21, 200421 yr Potential D'Backs line up / Rotation: 1.Counsell/Kata, 2B 2.Green/Tracy, 1B 3.Gonzalez, LF 4.Glaus, 3B 5.Green/Tracy RF 6.Terrero/Hairston (played 2 games at CF last year), CF 7.Clayton, SS 8.Hill/Snyder, C SP: Penny SP: Ortiz SP: Webb SP: Estes SP: Fossum That rotation is a lot better. and their 1-5 hitters would be solid. I don't see why this team couldn't push 500, which would be a 30 game improvement.
December 21, 200421 yr The Giants shouldn't even be on that list with the money they blew on Mike Matheny and Omar Vizquel. Best offseason, so far, would have to be St. Louis. They resisted blowing a lot of money on a no-hit catcher, and picked up another good glove/no hit catcher for $600k, their world-beating offense is still in tact, and they got Mark Mulder for a decent reliever, a guy who will probably pan out to be a #3 starter at best, and a catcher that hasn't proven anything above A ball.

They signed a 3B with a bum shoulder, a flyball pitcher for a park where the balls fly out, a $17 million OF that hits around the low-mid .800s in OPS, and a pitcher with health concerns while getting rid of one of the best pitchers in the game and getting no prospects to help their cash-strapped team.

December 21, 200421 yr Regardless of what everyone else thinks, the Giants have addressed their weaknesses and are, in turn, a better ball club than the team that won 91 games last season. Everyone is knocking the long term deals Vizquel and Matheny signed, but we're talking about the 2005 season. Looking at that alone, the Giants look better. That is why they are on this list.
