Unit to NYY 3 team trade is off

NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Dodgers withdrew Tuesday from the proposed three-team, 10-player trade that would have sent Randy Johnson from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the New York Yankees.

"As we sit here right now, the deal is no more," Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta said during a conference call. "I've been saying all along that we weren't going to do the deal unless it made sense for this club in 2005, and that was not the case."

This leaves the Yankees and the Diamondbacks to consider other ways to trade Johnson to the Yankees.

Earlier in the day, an official of one of the teams and a person close to one of the players involved in the trade said the deal had been submitted early Tuesday to baseball commissioner Bud Selig for approval. The two spoke on condition of anonymity.

But Pat Courtney, a spokesman in the commissioner's office, said in the afternoon that more documentation had to be submitted before Selig could consider the complex transaction.

Sources told ESPN that they believed the Dodgers had been holding up the paperwork process.

"There were specific things in this deal that didn't work out," DePodesta said. There were a lot of things to work out, a lot of things that were tentatively agreed on, but still details that we needed to work through."

One official involved in the discussions told Newsday, "We shook hands" Friday. A second executive confirmed the first official's story to Newsday and added, "Who's ever going to want to do business with [the Dodgers] again?"

Los Angeles would have received right-hander Javier Vazquez from the Yankees along with two top prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan. The Dodgers also would have gotten pitcher Mike Koplove from Arizona.

Arizona would have gotten outfielder Shawn Green and pitchers Brad Penny, Yhency Brazoban and Brandon Weeden from the Dodgers. Along with Johnson, the Yankees would have gotten pitcher Kaz Ishii from Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has been talking with the agent of free-agent outfielder J.D. Drew, who would replace some of the power lost by Green's departure.

In other Yankees news, free-agent center fielder Carlos Beltran was to meet Yankees owner George Steinbrenner on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.

Steinbrenner planned to attend the meeting with Yankees president Randy Levine and general manager Brian Cashman.

Beltran finished the season with the Houston Astros, who would like to re-sign him. It's also possible that the Chicago Cubs and Dodgers could pursue him.

Beinfest should jump all over this.

Send AJ, Enc, and Stokes to the Yankees for Vazquez with more than half his contract paid off, and Navarro.

Truth of the matter is, the Yanks want RJ bad and there only a handful of teams that they can use in a 3 team swap based upon the demanded pitchers. The question is, how bad do the Yanks want the Unit.

I think the new deal will be:

The NYY trade a manilla envelope with a 15 million dollar check for Randy Johnson.

Lets have an old time soccer trade.

10 Amish people, 80 cows, a sense of New York Pride, some red clam chowder and a baker dozen bagels and shmear for RJ.

exactly, milk them for all their worth. They've gotten so close there's no way their going to go into next season without him.

People said the same thing about the Red Sox and A-Fraud.

Another classy Dodger deal. The specter of Kevin Malone looms...

Anyone who wants one of their players will do a deal with them....

They make it seem like RJ to NYY is never going to happen, but in all likelyhood, he will be on the team come April. I guess they just need a different team along with the DBacks and NY, or maybe the DBacks settle down on their asking price.

BREAKING NEWS: Jason Giambi has just pulled ahead of Javier Vazquez in an informal popularity poll by New York Yankees fans. His recent surge places him somewhere between Pedro Martinez and the average frat guy in Cambridge, MA.

Florida, anyone?

I think I hear Beinfest drooling at what he could fleece the Yanks for for AJ,

If Vazquez was that set against going to the Dodgers, then it makes sense that L.A. would pull out of the deal. If Vazquez goes to L.A. and returns to form, he could've demanded a trade after the season or be declared a free agent. Also, I've heard that the Dodgers were looking to deal Vazquez to the White Sox, but the Sox started reneging on their deal.

I say amen. I have never been in favor of this deal. I want to keep our freaking farm system in tact and develop the talent that guys like Navarro have. We're going to need him in another year when Jorge can't handle a full season any more..

I'm also thinking that Javy wasn't ready for NY last year. He was over pitching towards the end of the season and lost his command of the strike zone. This season, god-willing he stays in NY, he'll bounce back and have an era closer to 4 - but will pitch over 200 innings. Vazquez = greater than El Duque.

More importantly, though, Javy isn't pushing 50. If he can settle down and pitch the way he can, he will be huge for a staff that is way too old.

My two cents.
