Your still believing things that were ment to be believed 2000 years ago, with no grip on reality or pressent day science, every day science proves it wrong but no one ever cares. If it werent pounded into your head as a child you wouldnt believe it. If you were put on the earth with the knowledge of a 21 year old, and someone tried to tell you theres a god up there the watched everything you do, and will answer your prayers half the time you ask for, them you'd say get out of my face thats bullshi*, hence the theory its brainwashing, watch George Carlin for an hour.

Meh, I haven't gone to church since I was 4 years old. Science doesn't prove or disprove God and until it's discovered exactly how the "Big Bang" occurred, I'll believe that there is a God. Not necessarily a Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. interpretation, but I'm sure some God does exist who may or may not have an active role in our lives.

Im not axactly critizing people who believe in a god, im critisizing religion, I think they all have there forms of ways to brainwash you, not so much anymore. I think with the knowlegde we have now, alot of aspects of some religions should be over looked now, instead people have been brainwashed to believe possibly just theorys of people living 2000 some odd years ago, been alot of people can't even see that because theyre blinded by constant brainwashing from parents church exc. But with some religion where fasting, and other grueling traditions made it a burden for alot of people, when in the end there a good chance it was in vein, and wasnt nessesarry, but i guess its a decision you'll have to make if you want to take the risk or not.

you know the big bang is just a theory also right?

What seems like more reliable theory the Big Bang or Creationism, atleast one has some data to rely the thoery on, unlike Creationalism

Heh, applying faith to science. I love the hypocracy.

:mischief

So let me get this straight, we're using a comedian and pseudo-scientific logic presented with horrendous spelling and incoherent thought to completely disqualify faith on its basic principles?

Flasportsfan, buddy, if I were you, I'd change my username or never visit the Religion forum again. You're getting torn up.

Its hard to win when everyone in heres brainwashed.. yeah brainwashed you are all very smart and educated but you rely on fairy tails to comfort yourself, There are hundreds of religions with defferent beliefs, so what makes you think Christianity, Judaism, Islam Ect would be the accurate religion. I know know I would get torn up because most people practice a religion and theres no way I could convince anyway the teachings are too deep implanted in your heads.

All civilizations have had a religion of some sort just for what thats worth.

I doubt its fully coincidence.

When theres a believer theres a non-believer, I shouldnt make me a tool to not believe it it. Its its been proven Religion has tried to take advangtage of its followers. Indulgences and other religious related bulls*** scams maybe mostly related to power than religious priorites, but It makes you think what else was stated or used to decieve or keep the people latched onto their religion.

flasportsfan, you may have gotten your point off wrong. People who blindly follow religion and proclaim religous superiority are treating their religion like a sports team meant to attain victory are foolish. But you cant indict all principles of morality and spirtuality with the negatiive elements. Dont throw the baby out with the bath water dude.

Religion is often used as a crux for those who dont want to explore the difficulties of life. People can be devoutly religious but also devoutly immoral people. Yours is a problem when religion and morality do not intersect and that happens a lot but often religion and morality can intersect and intersect well. Be wary of speaking in such broad strokes.

A lot of religious people also have profound respect for their fellow man and share many principles with each other that are central to the core morality of humans. I have a good friend that is a Catholic. He shouldnt be attacked as brainwashed just because he is a Catholic. He shares with me core moral principles as he does with the Dali Llama(sp?) and many others. But he is in staunch disagreement with many Catholics on various issues.

I think you share with us many of the same views on religion.

To argue this point, first you have to define brainwashing -

The application of a concentrated means of persuasion, such as an advertising campaign or repeated suggestion, in order to develop a specific belief or motivation.

Now I would have to agree that organized religion is a form of brainwashing. Because what is one thing that the majority of christian religion's require ? That magical word - "faith". So what is faith ? -

1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.

2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.

Faith is obtained by means of repeated auto suggestion to yourself. In order to believe something that plain and simple has no logical proof or any real evidence, you have to believe in it. You have to put faith in it.

It without a doubt must be suggested in your mind(either by yourself, or by someone else) that the impossible is true. That is the only way you can believe the impossible, through faith, and simply put, without brainwashing you could not have faith in anything. This is not a put down towards religion, just fact.

The key fallacy in the godfathers post is that he said christian religions. All religions require faith, and science nowadays is a religion. Why? Because in the past religion was mostly a means of explaining why things happen. In fact the modern religions focus on afterlife, it is a way to explain death. It is hard for many to believe that when we die its all over, thats why modern religions like christianity exist. And in determining afterlife people who created these religious groups have focused on charity and good will towards others. So theyve 'brainwashed' people into believing in a particular religion as opposed to another. but religion itself is not brainwashing. why? Because people seek faith inherently. They seek answers for what cannot be explained such as afterlife. Religion and faith are not brainwashing in themselves. You can argue that people have been brainwashed into believing certain things, but the truth is if a group of babies was left alone on an island (forget that theyll probably starve), as they grow older they will most likely develop some faith, whether its a worship of trees or the ocean. Religion does not require a brainwasher to wash peoples minds, itll occur on its own. Its human nature, which is what Marx always negated

Heh, applying faith to science. I love the hypocracy.

The difference being, if he wanted to look at how the Big Bang theory came about, all he has to do is put in the work to study the science behind it and gain an understanding of it. It's a lot better than placing faith in what some guy (who didn't understand the concept of the summer solstice) wrote down on a piece of parchment 4000 years ago.

just to prove your theory wrong. i grew up in communism, a system that preaced atheism. i grew up an atheist myself and only went to church so my grandmother wouldn't go alone.

as a grown man i somehow one day started believing in god and now consider myself a christian. oh, and i don't go to church. so how have i been brainwashed?

You could be a reactionary Christian, since you seem to associate a lot of things with communism that have nothing to do with it.

which lots of things do i relate with communism that have nothing to do with it?

I hope fish fry isnt saying that communism and atheism arent related, when Marx himself often wrote about the evils of religion and how it must not exist in a communist state.
