I'm just thinking of the stuff they've done since the trade dealine last year.

These are the names I can think of off the top of my head...

Additions:

C Paul Bako

C Brett Mayne

SP Derek Lowe

SP Brad Penny

1B Hee Seop Choi

OF JD Drew

2B Jeff Kent

Minor Leaguers

Subtractions:

RHP Guillermo Mota

C Paul Lo Duca

OF Shawn Green

3B Adrain Beltre

SP Jose Lima

OF Steve Finley

Any others to add?

Paul DePodesta is nothing close to Billy Beane...

You speak of bad contracts off the books. How about that bad contract they just signed with Lowe. They got rid of 4 maybe 5 dependable players and replaced them with 5 guys that are unproven or just plain suck. I think you can call Penny dependable.

I do agree with them on the Green trade it was just to much money. But they have gotten rid or lost almost all of the core players on that team.

Lima is decent but old and has had injury problems.

Finely is like 87.

Beltre is a one year wonder.

Green never was an all-star caliber player, which he was getting payed to do.

Lo Duca was a clubhouse guy, but nothing spectacular. Navarro could be that.

Choi, Lowe, Penny, and Drew is more than adequate replacement for those.

As for the "core" what did it get them like one playoff birth? They have been the Giant's bitch for a while, its time for them to try somethign different and get a new face to the team.

For Shawn Green....yes. Money wise and age wise. Without a doubt.

Choi wasn't even in the starting lineup by the end of the year. He also strikes out like crazy. Also they didn't get anything for Mota.

The NL West is pitiful..

but the Giants and Dodgers lineup is about the same.. I'd probably take the Giants lineup but barely.. and the bullpens are about even. The Dodgers pitching staff is much better than San Frans, IMO.

The Padres have the best lineup in the division and probably the best bullpen but a below average staff.

The West isn't very good but will be interesting.

The Giants have the best lineup in the NL. Last year, we were barely second behind the Cards, but that addition of Alou boosts us ahead. ANd as for the rotation, the bottom is about equal but the Giants are MUCH beter and the top
