MIAMI -- Florida Marlins right-hander Josh Beckett agreed to a $2.4 million, one-year contract Tuesday, leaving the team with no players in arbitration.

The deal represented a 59 percent raise for Beckett despite a disappointing 2004 season. He went 9-9 with a 3.79 ERA and three stints on the disabled list.

Beckett had his contract renewed by the Marlins at $1,509,375 last year after he was the MVP of the 2003 World Series.

Marlins agreed to terms with RHP Josh Beckett on a one-year, $2.4 million contract.

Beckett was eligible for arbitration for the first time. He made $1.72 million in 2002 and $1.51 million last season, but those totals were because of the major league contract he signed when he was drafted. Jan. 18 - 5:32 pm et

At least don't have to deal with Arbitration this year

Sadly, that leaves our two best pitchers on the FA market next summer. I wish they would've given a two or three year deal to one of them.

I don't think Beckett is FA-eligible next year, is he? Doesn't he need 6 years under his belt?

I thought it was four, but knowing me--I'm probably wrong...

Either way, I think he's in his 5th season now, right? Or 4th?

He is under Marlins control for three more years.

Beckett is not a free agent next season. He will go to arbitration.

Eventually we will need to look at long-term deals for our pitchers, or risk losing them.

The most obvious advice ever given :notworthy

:lol

This is good news and I am surprised not more people are on this as opposed to the Delgado fiasco. Beckett recieved a raise (29%?) over his last paycheck. This should be investing into a relationship that could pay off when it comes time to negotiate a longer deal.

AJ, too, recieved some good pay for his play last season. But it will come down to money...I dont think loyalty goes very far. Not after Pavano... :mischief

:lol

AJ & Beckett are both gonna leave faster than you can say Carl Pavano whenever they get the chance.

Until then, the Marlins own the rights to them. The thing is, when the Marlins are in contention this season - and they will be - will they deal AJ in order to not lose him completely come this offseason? Because I agree that Pavano set the norm around here - these guys cant help but look forward to being wooed as FA's and they have that right. The difference is, Pavano is overrated - imagine what Beckett and Burnett would be getting...I am still hoping that the D'Backs trade Jav Vaz for AJ (and throw in some cash, too...). I know...I can dream...

what did he do to deserve a raise besides pitch way below what he's capable and spend half the time on the DL?

he got a decrease the year before, might as well make him happy

but he hadn't done much the year before either. except for his work in the post season, his numbers weren't all that great.

still, for what he did in the postseason, him getting a decrease in salary was a slap in the face

The year after Beckett went on the DL list 3 times was 2003 so let's hope he has a 2003 type year in 2005.

He was bound to make near that amount in arbitration anyway. We did alright in the deal.

I wonder when the marlins will say enough is enough to beckett. He has all the talent in the world, but what do you do if he goes on the DL 800 times again this season. Do you want to re-sign him? When does potential become wasted potential, or too injury prone to be an asset

His blister problem will get better... many top pitchers had that problem. He just has to build up a very strong callous on his fingers to avoid the blister. He's had that blister like 4-5 times already... I imagine the callous is strong enough now.
