Sammy Sosa on his way to Orioles

Recommended Posts

Bruce Levine on ESPN.com Hot Stove show reports that trade is likely to happen this weekend but is contingent upon a 2006 extension for Sosa, and Players Union approval.

Word going around...

Baltimore Orioles Recieve:

Sammy Sosa

Chicago Cubs Recieve:

Jerry Hairston Jr.

3 Prospects (Erik Bedard rumored)

Then the Cubs would trade those prospects to Tampa Bay for Aubrey Huff..

Would be a good move but where's the bullpen?

Hmm...

Does anyone else think that the Twins will trade Jacque Jones for a couple of these prospects? I recall a report awhile ago saying the Cubs were interested in him.

GM Terry Ryan, on overseeing the Twins' $54 million player payroll: "We haven't mortgaged the franchise, although I might have to with Johan Santana."

O's putting together package for Sosa

The Orioles and Cubs are talking seriously about a trade that would send right fielder Sammy Sosa to Baltimore, The Sporting News has learned.

The Cubs also spoke with other teams about Sosa on Friday, but their most significant discussions were with the Orioles, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

A trade, however, does not appear imminent.

"We have no deal done," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.

The Cubs have shown prior interest in the Orioles' Jerry Hairston, who could become their left fielder and leadoff man, as well as reliever Jorge Julio, the Orioles' former closer.

Yet, even if the teams reach agreement on players, a deal would not be official until Sosa waived his no-trade clause, which he likely would do only if he received a contract extension.

Any team that acquires Sosa also would desire a restructuring of his contract, which includes a series of lucrative payments that would increase Sosa's guarantees to $43 million over the next two years if he were traded.

Sosa, 36, also would need to pass a physical, and the various contractual and financial issues in the deal would require the approval of Major League Baseball and the players' association.

Take it for what it's worth..

Rotoworld says that the Cubs would make a trade with the D-Rays for an OF after trading Sosa...possibly Aubrey Huff. I agree that this deal makes little sense for the O's except for one thing....They've lost out on every other option this offseason and had to do something in their minds. Sosa is still a major draw and they'll sell a lot of tickets at Camden (and Fort Lauderdale Stadium). Not that that matters much when they have to face the Red Sox and Yankees 38 times.
