If Beckett and Burnett don't BOTH stay health and have damn good seasons, the Marlins don't make the playoffs. Let's face it: Dontrelle is not going to revert back to his pre-All Star break rookie campaign form. He's a solid No. 4 pitcher, but that's all he'll ever be unless he develops some wicked new "out" pitch. At this point in his career, Leiter's good for a solid 6-inning performance and Valdez is pretty brutal. If Beckett and Burnett don't both have seasons approaching what Pavano did last year, the Marlins are going nowhere. Let's not kid ourselves -- the offense was pretty damn mediocre last year. We ranked 11th out of 16 in runs scored, rbis and ops (12th in slg, 10th in obp). For crying out loud, the brutal Cincinnati Reds, with injuries to both Junior AND Kearns, outscored us by 32 runs! Delgado will help -- but he's not going to turn our offense into the St. Louis Cardinals. I'd be shocked if we improve by 80 runs over the course of the year. Last year, that'd be good enough to get us to 7th out of 16 teams overall. So it all comes down to the pitching. Burnett and Beckett have to come up big.

Many teams like the Cubs or the Whitesoxs haven't won a WS in like forever. So to be 4th is great. But I need results.

February 19, 200521 yr Wow, I'm a little bit shocked to see us that high in ratings. It's hard to follow Baseball in the offseason here in the UK, but I wasn't aware that our team was supposed to be that good. I was looking at the roster last week and thinking we may only finish 5 games over .500 this year - What Gives?? OK, I know we sold some goodens like Pavano and so on, which has brough extra money to the team, but are we really as good a team as the ratings say? However I still think we should do better than last year. So many factors went against us. Perhaps this year we can stretch our legs - (or fins).
