Here's what ESPN's Rob Neyer thinks:

And then there are the Marlins and the Expos. Both teams are barely above .500, and neither can see the Braves' behinds even with the Hubble Space Telescope. But ... the Marlins are only four games behind the Phillies for the wild card, the Expos six games behind.

I'd advise the Expos to start thinking about 2004, but they just got Vladimir Guerrero back so they have to make one push for the wild card. It's not going to happen, though, because they're terrible at three spots: third base (Fernando Tatis), catcher (Michael Barrett), and center field (Endy Chavez). I think at least two of those guys will improve, but the Expos simply have too many empty spots in the batting order, especially when you consider that general manager Omar Minaya has to get Bud Selig's approval every time he wants to write a check.

The Marlins, on the other hand, do have a legitimate shot. Their lineup is solid, top to bottom, and all five of their starters have respectable (or better) ERAs. Aside from Alex Gonzalez's surprising power, I don't see anything particularly anomalous when I look at the Marlins, which makes me think they're for real. If they make another move, though, they should get a left fielder, as Todd Hollandsworth and rookie Miguel Cabrera just haven't been doing enough.

I thought El Rampo Already Left!!!

I call him El Rampo! :p

And I would love to see Kotsay getting assists in a marlin uniform again...

Yes he is...

cabs vs kotsay

who has more hr?

more rbi?

higher ops?

$4mil less?

Do you check stats before you make statements like that? ;)

LOOK UP STATS BEFORE COMMENTING

Cabs or Kotsay?

Sorry Mark, but I would rather have Conine than you playing left, no offense, but we need someone who can show some glove.

Cabs or Kotsay?

Sorry Mark, but I would rather have Conine than you playing left, no offense, but we need someone who can show some glove.

I thought Kotsay was a very good fielder with a cannon? Conine only plays the OF competently...what makes you think hes A Jones?

Kotsay his a great fielder... Conine is more like a Miller in the OF than a Jones

Kotsay could win a gold glove someday. If he came over he would play RF and the Encarnacion moves to LF. But thats a big IF because the marlins need more offense not more defense.

We are talking Bat and Defense combo vs. Cabs right?

I would keep Cabs, but for those who must have someone in left, i would choose Conine over Kotsay. Conine has a good bat, can play OF and is healthy. Kotsay is a very good fielder historically, but he has been bothered by injuries and his bat isn't doing so good.

i dont think anyone is arguing Conine over Kotsay....

but one Mr Clinton said Kotsay over Cabs

I already checked the stats now...

CABS FOR LF! Over Kotsay...

Brian Giles (and Janson KEndall) are very close to getting traded. THe Padres and Pirates have had many discussions that are heating up. Jake Peavy, Xavier Nady, Sean Burroughs and prospects for both of them. If that doesn't work out then he they will go to Seattle for Randy Winn,Rafael Soriano,Ben Davis, prospects. Also Oakland has offered Terrence Long,Eric Byrnes, and Mark Ellis, prospects for both. It will happen. A deal will be done either tomorrow or this weekend. Sorry Pirate fans, Giles is not happy there and he wants out. Bucs get a good package in return though

The Padres and A's are making powerful offers... The M's aren't far behind...

Theres no way we can realistically match those offers. :(

You're right. We can't. But if the Padres get Giles, it probably means we can make a big push for Rondell White...
