July 24, 200323 yr The Orioles say they are likely to not make any trades before the July 31 deadline. The O's still haven't received a counter-proposal from Sidney Ponson's agent, but even if they can't get Ponson signed to an extension, they seem content to let him go in free agency after the season for compensatory draft picks rather than trading him for less than a top prospect (such as Atlanta's Johnny Estrada). Source: Baltimore Sun *Glad the Braves wont get him...also means we wont trade for Conine..thank god, at least the management wants the best player at 1B. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer cites a report out of Pittsburgh that says Brian Giles has used his limited no-trade clause to veto deals to the Mariners and A's. Giles' contract allows him to refuse a trade to any team except Los Angeles, San Diego, Arizona, San Francisco, Colorado or Atlanta. The Padres are still looking like the leaders. The Pirates are said to be insisting that any team taking Giles must also take Jason Kendall's salary. The Padres aren't looking to add that much to their payroll, but they could use a catcher. Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer *Giles still available? We might still have a chance, but I dont think FO would do it because of money reasons. We could probably equal the Pads offer..again money reason will keep this from happening. Maybe if he does go to SD they then ship White or Klesko over here?
July 24, 200323 yr i read that the Padres want to open up PetCo park with White, Giles/Drew/whoever, and Kotsay in their OF meaning, they may trade Nady
July 24, 200323 yr i read that the Padres want to open up PetCo park with White, Giles/Drew/whoever, and Kotsay in their OF meaning, they may trade Nady Just how good is Xavier Nady? And hey, our FO never fails to supprise us (i.e. Pudge, Lowell, ect.)...
July 24, 200323 yr i read that the Padres want to open up PetCo park with White, Giles/Drew/whoever, and Kotsay in their OF meaning, they may trade Nady They've made it very clear they want to open the dog park with players the people want to see. Giles is one of those peoples
July 24, 200323 yr not good enough to overttake LF for us Didn't think so... I honestly think Rondell White may be here soon... Just my gut... My gut has lead me in the right direction all year...
July 24, 200323 yr Author Didn't think so... I honestly think Rondell White may be here soon... Just my gut... My gut has lead me in the right direction all year... Cabs does seem a little more relaxed after his day off...working count more and has 3 hits in last 2 games...can we afford to wait it out? I dont think so.
July 24, 200323 yr Guys, we may not need to trade at the moment. I know this sounds crazy, but if we can get increased production from Morde, Fox, H-worth, Cabs, and Sea Bass (sounds impossible, but they can't slump all year long) we could see the same effect as adding one or two more bats on the bench. Remember, we have been winning without the bat production. We need to solidify our pitching and we will win more. Example, last night, our starter and bullpen did a great job, except for Looper. The player you least expected to do anything, do something and we won. Example, game in Montreal where TH hit a homer, no one expected it, but he did. We need the guys we have to step up, and it looks like thye are trying and starting to do this.
July 24, 200323 yr Regarding the chances of getting Giles, I would like the idea if, at the same time, we could turn around and deal Kendall to some other team for more pitching. But the problem here are financial considerations: who is going to be willing to take on Kendall's contract? Because we can't, and we have too many catchers at this point anyways. Maybe if we offer Castro, Bump and Neal you can have something done. Castro is doing basically nothing, but the problem with this is that you have to be sure that you can sign Pudge at the end of the year, and I think something can be worked out, especially if you take into consideration all the pluses that the Marlins can offer him (hispanic population, close to home, etc). I would hate to see Bump go, but if you trade Kendall for a big name reliever and prospects you would not only offset that loss, but maybe even offset dealing Gonzalez, Snare, and Smith to the Rangers for Urbina. The thing, like always, is money. Giles is making a good amount and would be signed until 2005, and I don't know if we can make that kind of committment. This is just an idea, and I still say we need a LF...
July 24, 200323 yr We couldn't turn around and deal Kendall just like the Pirates can't turn around and deal him now. Thats why he's in a package deal situation. Why bring him here and have us playing the role the Pirates are playing now next year? Doesn't make sense. Pirates and Fish don't mix (or deal for that matter)
July 24, 200323 yr I wouldn't want to deal Castro... If you deal a catcher to the Pirates it's definately Redmond...
July 24, 200323 yr Why not Just make it a 3 way where they get Kendall and we get Giles.. Pirates are willing to take less for him...
July 24, 200323 yr Why not Just make it a 3 way where they get Kendall and we get Giles.. Pirates are willing to take less for him... But nobody wants Kendall! Unless... I might be crazy, but the Mets have Vance Wilson starting catcher. When Piazza comes back he's most likely gonna play 1B, so they might be willing to take Kendall... A guy can dream...
July 25, 200323 yr The Padres Might want Kendall Check out teams and see if any needs a Catcher.... There aren't many teams that couldn't use a good catcher...
July 25, 200323 yr White is still on the Market Because Nevin is in the OF too. Their outfield is packed right now. White, Kotsay, Nevin and Nady.
