Giants placed closer Armando Benitez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

Has there ever been a worse month for closers than April 2005? The Giants have yet to comment on whether Benitez will miss more than two weeks. Jim Brower becomes the favorite for saves in San Francisco. Scott Eyre could also get oppotunities. Apr. 27 - 2:04 pm et

How did he pull his hammy?

he pulled it covering first on the last play of the game...after the game i saw him being escorted to the player's parking lot on a medical cart

This really really really sucks... But the Giants will be alright. They won 91 games last season without a closer. They'll just have to do it again until he comes back....

last year they had bonds....

The West is just mediocre enough where the Giants can win it.

Fair enough... And I just saw a somewhat comforting stat as well. Last season, Barry was tearing the league up in April and the Giants were 8-13 and 5 games back in the NL West. Through the same amount of games this year, they are 10-11 and 3 1/2 games back. It's way too early to look at standings, but this shows that the Giants can't simply win by Barry going on a tear. Last season, they didn't have a closer and found a way to bounce back and win 91 games. The rest of the team stepped it up, as they will again this season... I hope anyways... :confused

the giants have been snakebit this year...

Bonds hasn't played this year and is still out for another 1-3 weeks

Alou missed most of April with a leg injury

Alfonzo is currently injured, had to be taken out wednesday and didn't play thursday

Durham has been playing hurt the entire season

Snow missed a few games and was almost put on the DL

and now Benitez is out until September....

so does this mean Aardsma is gonna get the call?

757267

nah, they sent Aardsma down to AA so they can try to convert him to a starting pitcher (he's been doing pretty well too BTW)....

they called up Scott Munter, but I was hoping it would be Matt Cain or Jesse Foppert

Would the Giants still be interested in Ugueth Urbina?

757268

if the Tigers were to lower their asking price....last year the Tigers wanted a combination of Matt Cain and either Noah Lowry or Merkin Valdez

LOL.

i find the fact that you think bonds will return in a week or 2 comical.

the man is still limping and just had liquid removed from his knee for the second time since surgery last week.

he has not done any baseball activities and all the news storys say hes still at least 2 months away.

sucks for papi, though throwing out a hammy while covering first is totally the kind of injury i could have envisioned him suffering.

dude's out of shape.

I'm not sure it has to do with being out of shape. This is the same injury that's plagued Griffey and I don't think you'd consider him out of shape. It's just one of those freak accidents.

I'm in San Francisco this week and have been hearing the Mando news.

He's out for the season. Two of three tendons attaching his hamstring to the pelvis completely tore off and they are going to use anchors and screws to reattach. The Giants are on the hook for the entire $4.1m they owe him this seaon.
