Yahoo! Sports Game Preview

Already off to the best start by a Florida Marlins pitcher, Dontrelle Willis tries to become the first six-game winner in the major leagues in the opener of a three-game series with the struggling Colorado Rockies.

The left-hander became the first Marlins starter to begin a season with five consecutive wins Saturday, when he overcame two rain delays and allowed an unearned run and three hits in five innings of a 2-1 victory over the Phillies. The game was called in the middle of the sixth following a third delay.

Willis, who made his major league debut against the Rockies on May 9, 2003, has not given up an earned run in three of his five starts in 2005. He started the season with a 24-inning scoreless streak, and on Monday was named National League pitcher of the month for April.

The Marlins have lost two of three since Willis last pitched, including a 5-2 defeat to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. A.J. Burnett gave up season highs of nine hits and three runs in six innings.

Colorado fell to 0-6 on its nine-game trip with an 8-7, 12-inning loss to San Diego on Wednesday. Dustan Mohr hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Luis Gonzalez had a solo shot in the ninth for the Padres, and Miguel Ojeda's RBI single in the 12th handed the Rockies their fourth straight one-run loss and eighth consecutive defeat overall.

``It's pretty draining,'' starter Jason Jennings said after allowing six runs and four hits in six innings. ``We showed a lot of heart. But we have done just enough every day to lose.''

Another loss will tie Colorado for the worst road trip in club history. The Rockies went 0-7 against San Diego and San Francisco from June 25-July 1, 1999.

Rockies first baseman Todd Helton also homered Wednesday, giving him two in the last three games after hitting only one in April. Helton's homer gave Colorado a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning, but the Rockies have led in 15 of their 19 losses.

D Train is doing something special, and you can just feel it...I don't know--just a tingling sensation everytime he pitches, like you know he's going to do well.

I realize his April stats have always been good, but you really have to take a closer look, and compare. He's never been this good with control--he is hitting the corners, and pitching exactly where he wants to. He's more poised and focused, it seems.

I remember hearing that he said the reason he wasn't pitching as well was because his shirt was too small and kept coming out of his pants. They gave him a bigger shirt, and now he's a stud. Hmmm

Last year his shirt was really big and kept coming out. It wasn't too small, it was too baggy and kept slipping out as he pitched later in the game. No clue if that had any effect, though.
