Posted June 5, 200519 yr You know, this forum really is quite easy to predict. We lose a few games and everyone must go, from the players, to the coaches, to the kid selling peanuts in the infield box seats. We win a few games in a row and everything is ok. Let me tell you people something. I have said it many times. Baseball is a marathon. It is not a sprint. You people living in the everything must be done now menatality, for this Arnie is semi-correct in his assessment of the mentality of the fan now. I mean granted when 60% of this board are still going through puberty thats to be expected, so you let it roll off your back. We are what? 1.5 games out of first. This is June 5. Are we underperforming right now? Yes. Will that continue all year? Highly unlikely. Here is what we know: Juan Pierre will heat it up. Its his M O. Mike Lowell is hitting the ball hard and his bat speed is there. Players go through rough stretches, as long as the mechanics are there, and they are, he will be fine. We are starting to see signs of that. Will Mikey knock the world on fire like he has in the past? Not this year. That's life. That's baseball. Paul LoDuca is having an odd year. He started off guns ablazing and has been ice cold as of late. But then again so has this entire team. Juan Encarnacion is playing above his head and has been lazy in the outfield far too many times this year. Sea Bass is not only being productive in the field but at the plate as well, who would have seen that coming. Put your hands down cause I know you are lying. Al Leiter is done. Matt Perisho is done, but then again he was never really anything else. Jack McKeon, while making a few questionable moves here and there is still the best man for this job. There is noone else better out there. Remember first place is still right there in our sights. The National League East is the best division in baseball. Listen to any scouts around baseball. They still know this team will be fine. Yet the fans here cant get it. Here's what you do. Cut Perisho. Convince Leiter to retire...provided you can find an arm somewhere that is somewhat productive. If it means trading Encarnacion or some minor leaguer (Willingham) then you do it. Things will work themselves out. We still have a long way to go. We are not even half way through this season. And when the ship rights itself, this board will again become the asskissing place it is during times of winning. You people make me sick. At least some of those out here are consistent, no matter what happens, they stick to their guns. Then again many of you also wanted OMG to get regular playing time last year and we know what happened there. Oh ya. Enjoy your damn Sunday. :hayseed
June 5, 200519 yr Lemme just say that this is ridiculous....When the Mets nearly swept us at home, the time on WFAN after the last game of the series, mets fans were up in arms over the mishandling of their pen and Tom Glavine leaving early....Fans called up and ripped the team like no body's business....It's all a part of being a fan whether irrational or not and you coming out ripping those people is irresponsible. It is a fan's given right to do this....Yankees fans have 26 titles and yet their complaining because their team is .500....do you think they have expectations too??? Even White Sox fans complain about their team.... I don't think this season's over at all..the marlins always have stretches every year where they play like s***. I've got faith...we'll be fine.
June 5, 200519 yr Nice post! Really. Now let's see. You are calling people out for wanting to see Robinson and McKeon fired. Yet you suggest Perisho and Leiter be let go. Seems contradictory. I agree with you that it is a marathon, not a sprint. And yes this team has all the ingredients to make a nice run. I also agree McKeon is the best man for the job. Who would we get to replace him, Admin Bowa? But it is fair game to call them like you see them. Express frustration when the team is playing lousy, and exhiliration when they are doing well. It is all part of being an enthusiastic fan.
June 5, 200519 yr If it means trading Encarnacion or some minor leaguer (Willingham) then you do it. :hayseed 797328 But I like Enc.

I've got faith...we'll be fine. 797335 I agree here. People who don't ever criticize their team make me sicker than those that do. It's only natural to want more. I'd bet if you went back to the last month of 2003 there were STILL people complaining whenever we lost a game. I do it. I'd be willing to bet you do it too sometimes, Das. Everyone questions, everyone complains at some point. Yes, Lowell and JP will eventually be fine, and yes, it's a marathon and not a sprint, but you have to win a marathon gradually and dropping 10 of 12 isn't a good way to do so. Leaving Mike and Juan in there while they struggle is NOT helping the team, now or in the longrun. They will heat up eventually, and I know they need to play to do so, but playing them every day and having them go 0-4 does nothing for the team at this juncture, especially when you've got a guy like Easley who's hot and can play. Work with what you've got. And I've always been a fan of McKeon's, and I think he's the right guy for this team, but seeing him and Mota yesterday leads me to worry about whether or not there are clubhouse issues, as there were with Boles.
June 5, 200519 yr Last year I'm pretty sure you had like 6 threads that said the same exact thing. Yet the team continued to under perform and never recovered from their mid year struggles. I agree that I think this team will be ok because well the talen is obviously there. There needs to be a few moves made and hopefully they will be sooner rather than later.
June 5, 200519 yr Enc has been one of the most consistent hitters on the team so far....particularly with RISP. Why in the world would we trade away one of the few players on the team that can hit in the clutch when this is the one area we are struggling most?

There are no guarantees he would perform better than Enc the rest of the year. In fact, it is unlikely. Remember, Enc was also a highly prized prospect and it looks like this year he is developing the consistency to be a solid OFer.

Willingham's bat would be rather ordinary for a starting 1B/3B/LF/RF. Very similar to Encarnacion's. Not to say he isn't more than deserving of a chance at realizing that potential. Your common everyday corner outfielder usually hits very very well.

June 6, 200519 yr nice post Das, but I would like to find a sports team fan forum that behave differently when their team struggles like we have. Most of the members use this to relieve some of the stress, nothing wrong with that. I know some act childish, but that's to be expected due to the age and background differences.
June 6, 200519 yr Blah blah blah. Yada yada yada. It's the same old thing. This might not be a slump.

Losing as many games as the Fish have in the last 2 weeks is disheartening, and hopefully can be corrected soon before someone in the East gets hot and starts to run away with the division... I quote Barney Fife: "We need to nip this thing in the bud...Nip it...in the bud..."
