except for the one run he gave up another solid outting by Scott Olsen. I hope this kid gets a chance to start another game against a more worthy opponent. Just think, Olsen has one or 2 more solid outings we may be more likely to trade burnett.

Side note about Burnett: He is a thrower, not a pitcher. He feels he can dominate whith his rediculous velocity. He still has to learn that control, and pitch selection is more important than throwing a 102mph fastball. This is why his era is hovering around 4 and hes a .500 pitcher. He's got the best "stuff" on the team but he just cant control it.

He allowed 2 runs..

Scott showed he is much like Willis was last year. If he keeps himself ahead in counts, he'll do awesome. When he starts getting behind in the count, he struggles.

I guess you missed the "deer in the headlights" look after McCann went yard to centerfield.

The kid will be fine but let's call a spade a spade.

good point. but remember this kid has been in the majors for what, a week? i'm sure every major league pitcher has the same look/reaction when they give up their first major league home run.

AJ Burnett:

3.14 era - That is hovering around 4??

K/BB is about 3/1

and a WHIP of 1.19 12th best in the NL

if you've been listenting or wathcing the games at all recently you'd know that burnett is becoing a better "pitcher" and not just a thrower, he has been changing speeds and using his change up a lot more

basically your post on AJ is just flat out wrong

Aj has turned it around and is becoming more of a pitcher, with Beckett's health in question all the time, we cant afford to let him go...lets keep the big three together

Burnett, Beckett, Willis, Moehler, Olsen (Lieter)

I think he composed himself nicely after McCann's homer. He stayed aggressive and kept putting the pitches right in there rather than losing control like many young picthers do. For example, Bazardo and Kensing. (I am aware that the following batter did have a full count.)

Last outing Burnett threw something like 40% change ups. He changed speeds very well and kept the DRays off balance.

Let's see if he can repeat that performance again tonight before proclaiming he hasn't learned how to pitch.

Burnett's greatest problem this year has been lack of run support. His record is not a fair reflection of his peformance.

I thought Olsen looked pretty bad last night -- he was bailed out of the first inning by a couple of bad swings (Orr hit a pitch that just about hit him..). His control just wasnt there -- falling behind everyone and hanging his slider on various occasions (most notably to McCann). That being said, It's tough for a young guy to come out of the bullpen when their entire careers they've been pitching as starters.

If they keep Olsen in the bigs, It needs to be as a starter, not a reliever.

I think your being a little hard on him...he was put in a situation unfamiliar to him and he kept the lead which was most important....I liked his composure and love to see him stick in the MLB.

I would definitely like to see Olsen in the starting rotation. He composes himself like he has been playing in the big leagues for years. He doesn't look scared out of his wits and his debut against the D-Rays was great. I don't care if they are a really bad team. He still did a great job and I think his stuff was not bad at all last night. He obviously isn't going to be the best we got, but he can't be worse than Leiter.

If he's not starting there is absolutely no point to him staying with the club.

Not necessarily, but given our problems in the rotation outweigh those in long relief it'd be smart.

I'm excited for the kid.

He has a tough assignment against Sheets though.

The best of luck to him :thumbup

I hope for his sake and ours that he does well tomorrow night :lol

i hope olsen pitches good tommorow, we gotta try and get a nice 6-7 game winning streak going or something.

Actually -- it's quite necessary. Throwing a 21 year old with big-time potential into a long relief role is just flat out idiotic. He needs to throw consistently, whether it be at AA or here, he has to start. Coming out of the pen once every other two weeks in mop-up situations does him nothing but stall his development.

We need Olsen in the rotation next year. Thus, it is rather silly and naive to keep him in the bullpen.

Worked well for Dennis Martinez and the rest of the O's/Earl Weaver's young pitching talent

how about the fact that Scotty is adamant about NOT pitching in the bullpen?

Well, he can suck on it and like it.
