Why Having Expensive Players Doesn't Equal Wins

Featured Replies

I was doing some thinking about the Baltimore Orioles recently, and I realized something. The Orioles are only 1 game behind the Red Sox and Yankees this year, but not because of big free-agent pickups like Sosa, Ponson, Palmeiro, and Lopez over the past few years. The real reason that they are winning is because their team is held up by younger players who are making basically nothing compared to the team's superstars.

For example: (05 Salary)

-Highest team BA in 2005: Brian Roberts ($340,000): .345

Lowest team BA in 2005: Sammy Sosa ($17.875 million): .233

-Highest number of wins in 05: Rodrigo Lopez ($2.375 million): 9 (ERA of 4)

Highest number of losses in 05: Sidney Ponson ($8.5 million): 8 (ERA of 6)

Of course, the team is also paying $7.5 million to an injured Javy Lopez. But with the nearly $18 million they have put towards Sosa, they could have spent that on a whole bunch of players.

who's the one guy, that if they lost, they would suffer the most? Miguel Tejada...

who's the highest paid player on the team? Miguel Tejada

You need to get your information straight.

Tejada is making just over $10 million this season. As I said earlier, Sammy's making nearly $19 million this year. These figures come from ESPN.

Well, that's better than $19 million....

The Orioles have a fairly expensive offense. That's they're way of doing things. They acquire good players from other teams from trade or free agency. The pitching staff usually comes from within the organization. The only problem is that many pitchers are rushed, except John Maine, who is still in AAA and shouldn't be.

What about the Mets and Beltron? There were times when he cost the team plenty both game wise and literally. Remember how easily Delgado faked him out into a Double Play because eh did not bother to run?

I know of neither, but I know of Beltran.

To play devil's advocate, A-Rod is (and historically has when he was with Texas) led his team in major offensive categories (HR, AVG & RBI) and clearly makes the most money.

And his team has never won the World Series... :whistle

Wow. Overpaid players well past their primes don't help ball clubs as much as ballplayers playing at arbitration-slowed rates during their prime years? I'm shocked.
