MARLINS!

Heres an excerpt from Morgan's article on ESPN.com about the pennant races:

Philadelphia leads the wild-card race by two games over the Florida Marlins (two back), D-Backs (five back), Montreal Expos (five-and-a-half back) and Los Angeles Dodgers (six-and-a-half back).

The NL wild-card race is wide open, but I give a slight edge to Florida. I believe the Marlins have the best overall personnel. While that doesn't mean they'll win, they do have an edge in talent.

Everything has seemed to change for the organization since Jack McKeon replaced Jeff Torborg as manager on May 11.

The Marlins have some dominant pitchers in Dontrelle Willis and Mark Redman. They've built their team on strong pitching and great team speed, which enables them to steal bases and manufacture runs.

Joe M. what a classy fella

congratulations joe, this board now loves you

Well he has been the most consistent Crew of ESPN to be in our side!!! Lets see what he phillies do next weekend when they face the giants!

Joe Morgan is a classy guy. Never seen him bashing any teams, specially the fish. :thumbup

Good job JoeY. :D

gotta love Morgan. He signed a baseball card for me when I was a kid growing up in Cincy.

I always figured he'd be coaching by now.

Joe's doing the Dodgers-Reds game on ESPN2 right now with Al Michaels, haven't seen him do a baseball game in a while!

Al Michaels actually used to do the Reds games a loooong time ago before Marty Brennamen started his long run there.

Marlins are now 1 game back!!!!

At least Morgan isn't Jim Caple, who seems to bash either the Marlins or Jack McKeon frequently.

Im still in awe over the accomplishments of this team.

Why? I predicted for us to do this well...

But I also predicted the Phillies to win the division, and that the Mets would have 90 wins. BUT, alot of others had those same exact thoughts as me. :lol

Well, you would THINK that throwing lots of money at players would work. But look what happened to the Mets:

-Mo Vaughn, with his huge contract, has been a disaster, and I guess he won't play baseball again, after that injury.

-Tom Glavine has not lived up to expectations since being signed as a free-agent.

-Roberto Alomar, Jeromy Burnitz, and Armando Benitez were all traded after not coming even close to previous career years.

-The Mets' 120 million payroll at the beginning of the season has bought them a 5th place title. :w00t

And the Phillies:

-Signed Jim Thome to a huge contract, who has been average

-Pat Burrell, the starting left-fielder, is hitting under .200, despite starting all season.

-Marlon Byrd has disappointed them

-Other than Wolf, Millwood, and Cormier, the Phillies' staff hasn't been much to look at.

Umm... Jeromy Burnitz is having a great season.

Jim Thome has been average? Tell that to a Philly fan.

-Marlon Byrd has disappointed them

A real dissappointment, hitting . 300 and all...

Padilla, Myers?

Joe Morgan knows his ship. I am surprised too he isnt coaching - because playing ball, I would watch ESPN and listen to Joe Morgan all the time - I learned so much by just watching a game with him as an announcer. The guy has an excellent baseball mind - and I am surprised that hasnt been recognized.

As for our continued success - I too expected us to get 90 wins. I love how everyone sees us as an underdog, and we should be, but we are a pretty damn talented underdog. I was disappointed, vastly so, that this team was underperforming back in May. But that was B.D. or B.M. - before Dontrelle or before McKeon. I honestly didnt think changing the manager would do a whole lot - because you are still driving the same car. But I was wrong about that.

I was right about the Mets. I picked either they or the Braves would be at the bottom (should have known better than the Braves, but Millwood for a backup catcher? Maybe that is what set Lopez off...).The Expos are all but dead, finally. The Phils I picked to win the division only because how could you not - eventhough I honestly didnt believe they would have what it takes to win the NL East. I saw Thome underperforming - and based on the money they threw at him, he has underperformed. His numbers are similar to Lee's, does that mean we should throw the same money at Lee that the Phils did at Thome? Dont make me puke...

Same here. I said that the Braves bullpen and rotation would under perform (I was right), but nobody knew that Sheffy would be THIS good coming off a dissapointing season last year. And nobody knew Javy wouldbe half as good as he is (literally, I thought he'd have half the HR and RBI he does have). You also couldn't predict Fick hittng . 300, and Giles having this good of a year.

Padilla, Myers?

He's still underperforming for the cash he's making, and so is Jim Thome.

Byrd had a really bad start to the season, to the point where I heard alot of trade rumors about the Phils trying to go after another centerfielder.

Padilla's alright, but Myers isn't much to look at.

Just because Byrd stared the season rough doesn't mean he's a dissapointment. Would you consider Pudge a dissapointment? Because he started the season just as bad as Byrd did.

Padilla's alright, but Myers isn't much to look at.

:lol
