Baseball America recognizes Marlins players

Featured Replies

BEST TOOLS

Several Marlins were recognized in Baseball America's annual "Best Tools" issue as voted by league managers. Luis Castillo was named best defensive second baseman. Juan Pierre was best bunter and base runner.

A.J. Burnett was voted as having the league's second-best fastball behind Billy Wagner. Alex Gonzalez came in third behind Venezuelan countrymen Cesar Izturis and Omar Vizquel as the best defensive shortstop.

Perhaps the biggest omission: Mike Lowell was not included among the top three defensive third basemen.

Actually it's other managers voting, not necessarily the BA staff, but nevertheless... cool to see.

you are correct that is a huge omission, with Rolen on the DL, there is NO better defensive third baseman in the NL than Lowell, with Rolen out as long as he has been it would be a TRAVESTY if Mikey doesn't win a gold glove this year

I agree. If Mike Lowell doesnt win the gold glove, something is wrong. Because it will come down to his lack of stats (which we all know he has been doing pretty well since July...).

who were the top 3 if i might ask

Rolen

Castilla

Ramirez

That better not be Aramis they are talking about. Because he might be one of the worst fielding third basemen without Derrek Lee. See 2003 and before.

complete bull, HIS BAT ISNT SUPPOSED TO HOLD A CLOUD OVER HIS GLOVE. Expecially for Feilding awards.. thats horrible...

not only mikey, but CBas #3? no,,,,

ok, errors are not a good indicator of how good a fielder is

Very true, but throwing errors are...that's something Ramirez has in droves, and this is with DLee on the other end helping out.

agreed, Im just saying it is very interesting that this is what other managers think

more then just errors and fieldling percentage what is the range of the 3B also. Lowell doesnt have a huge range but indeed is a top defensive fielder for the range he covers. Alex covers ALot is why.

Top 3 better 3B than Lowell ..

Rolen - understable

Castilla - understable, iffy.

Ramirez - wtf?

Pierre as best baserunner????

Yeah, I love JP, but this year he can't possibly be the best. His confidence has been down, and that's cost him SBs. Also, is it me, or does he seem to get thrown out by "the perfect peg" an awful lot? I think Piazza even got him once or twice.

Still better than everyone else in the NL.

Baserunning deals with more than just stealing bases.
