A batboy who accepted a dare Sunday by trying to drink a gallon of milk without throwing up has been suspended by the Marlins for his actions.

 

The unidentified batboy will not be allowed to work the upcoming, six-game homestand at Dolphins Stadium against the Cardinals and Mets from Aug. 29 through Sept. 4.

 

The Marlins refused to comment on the suspension.

 

But Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny, who offered $500 to the batboy if he could drink a gallon of milk in less than an hour before Sunday's game, was angry about the decision.

 

''It's kind of ridiculous that you get a 10-game suspension for steroids and a six-game suspension for milk,'' Penny said.

 

Penny pitched for the Marlins from 2000 until the middle of last season, when he was traded to the Dodgers.

 

''It's ridiculous that they worry about stuff like that,'' Penny said. ``It shows they [the Marlins organization] don't know anything about the game. That kind of stuff goes on everywhere. It didn't affect the way he worked, the way he did his job.''

 

According to Penny, the batboy drank the gallon of milk within the time allotment but was unable to keep it down.

He provoked it, he got the kid in trouble and now he's blaming the Fish for something that was his doing. What a jerk! How can he say it didn't affect the "way he worked" when the kid is vomiting instead of doing his job?

By that logic, Penny is to blame not the BB.

 

In no way does the Bat Boy deserve a 6 game suspension for something as innocent as this. Had it been beer or something else, then you got an issue.

 

But Milk? C'mon...

While 6 games is probably too much, I think you have to do something in this situation if nothing else but to set a precedent. You don't want the batboy taking money from players on dares. You allow this, and I know this may be a stretch but who knows if the next time a player offers him 1500 dollars or whatever to mess with some of the bats a little or to hide a player's glove or anything. These kids will do a lot when there is that much money at stake especially if the player (whether it be a road player or Marlin) tells them they won't get caught. You just don't want the batboys and players making any kind of monetary deal -- it can only lead to problems.

Then a warning of a suspension would have been appropriate if he did it again. Not just slap a 6 gamer on him for the incident.

During my sopohomore year of college, our dorm held the exact same contest. NOBODY was able to hold it down. People were puking all over the place. It made the front page of the school newspaper. I didn't participate, but it was hilarious watching my friends attempt the impossible.

Dumb to suspend. Just having some fun. I mean its not like Penny bought him a case of Bud and said if you can drink this in an hour then I'll give $500. I would have done the same thing the bat boy did and I think everyone else here would have too. A warning of some sort would have been fine.

Yeah a warning or a lower suspension. Like I said, I can see why the Marlins don't want to just ignore it but 6 was probably too harsh.

$500 for drinking milk? You'd have to be out of your mind not to take Penny up on his offer. Especially if you're a kid, $500 seems like millions and when it's a MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER daring you, a young kid isn't going to say no. And do you honestly think the kid thought of the possibility of even being suspended for drinking milk? Of course not, and why, because it's absolutely ridiculous.

 

It's stupid that the Marlins suspended him. The DODGERS should have fined Penny and the batboy should have been left alone.

Do we know how old this kid was? Most kids are jaded when they are young especially if they are being enchanted by a ballplayer. Thoughts like that go out the window when you are young.
