Posted September 1, 200519 yr Not to get on the kid for a bad night last night (hey, it happens), but before you say "it was just bound to happen," I must remind you that although he got the win against the Cubs, he did get touched up in the later stages of his outing pretty hard. Coincidentally (or perhaps totally unrelated), the worst he's looked this year happened to come after McKeon let him pitch the complete game against the Dodgers. So...is anyone worried that it might be more than simply "leaving pitches up in the zone?"
September 1, 200519 yr I don't think it's that. I think it's his pitch selection. You can almost predict ahead of time when he will throw a fastball on the inside corner and when he's going to throw a changeup away. I think Treanor isn't calling a good game and Vargas is giong along with it. He's predictable and teams are starting to pick up on that. Hopefully next game Lo Duca catches him and he has a better game. I'm not worried. He'll make an adjustment.
September 1, 200519 yr He just pitched against one of the better offenses in the game tonight. It wasn't unexpected for him to get touched up. The end of the Cubs game was a bit disappointing, but I think Treanor isn't calling that great of a game. Put Lo Duca back there and I think we'll be ok.
September 1, 200519 yr From what I've read/heard, catchers don't call games and neither do pitchers. Pitch selection and sequence is largely decided prior to the game by coaches and players, and changed in the middle of the game by the manager.

Why else do you see pitchers shaking off the catcher?
September 1, 200519 yr Well, part of it is to confuse the batter. Like a middle infielder punching his glove when there's no chance of a pickoff move.
September 1, 200519 yr Link Vargas will not be lit up ever. thumbup.gif --- WildMarlinMan2003 What happened last night had to be our imagination
September 1, 200519 yr I am more worried by the way Beckett has SUCKED lately and Burnett's back to being Wild Thing.... Vargas is young and he will have games like last night.... Valdez has been the only stable pitcher for us the last couple of weeks... I mean he doesn;t do it pretty but he has gotten the job done....
September 1, 200519 yr Author I am more worried by the way Beckett has SUCKED lately and Burnett's back to being Wild Thing.... Vargas is young and he will have games like last night.... He's struggled on the road, and against the NL Central so far, maybe getting him home for a big game (which he generally shows up for) will be the cure-all he needs. AJ concerns me. One step forward, two steps back as far as "pitching" goes.
September 1, 200519 yr My only concern comes from the last couple of games after he pitched that complete game. It seems like there is too much expected of him at his age. Regardless of how good he has shown to be, he is still a rookie. I felt that he was kept around too long in both of the starts after the complete game. He was in a few pitches to many in the previous start. A reliever should have been in before he gave up the extra runs. As for last night, he didn't seem to have it and shouldn't have been left out there until he completed 5 innings.
September 1, 200519 yr It's called the Cardinals. They're not in first no reason. 925096[/snapback] Exactly. It was St. Louis. Dont worry about 1 bad start.

September 1, 200519 yr He's alright. It's the cardinals offense. Pujol's triple last night was on a great pitch low and away. Pujol's is just an elite hitter that can take a pitchers pitch and turn it into a mistake.
September 1, 200519 yr Not worried about Vargas at all, the Cardinals are a really good team and they can hit. My only concern is that all of our big guns have lost games except for D-Train and Valdez. I hope after their loss they get their s*** together and start winning games cuz we really need our pitchers to step up again.
September 1, 200519 yr I wouldnt be worried quite yet.. Like they said it was the Cardinals.. The Cardinals without Edmonds, Walker, Sanders, Rolen.. Still though.. The Cardinals bench is no shame in losing too. They are playing great this year filling in for the injuries. I think Vargas will be fine. He's gonna have rought starts, it just happens. We'll see how he can bounce back in his next start..
