Alex Gonzalez to miss at least a week?

Alex Gonzalez - SS - FLA - Sep. 6 - 9:46 am et?

Alex Gonzalez is expected to miss at least a week because of inflammation in his right elbow and could be out longer if an MRI scheduled for today reveals more extensive damage.

''I don't feel good,'' Gonzalez said. ``I don't feel like the same Alex.'' Damion Easley and Robert Andino will play in his place. Sep. 6 - 9:46 am et

talking in the third person eh???? Matt is not a fan of that.

Everyone knew he was injured for at least a week, but he kept playing. That is probably what really did him in. If he got it looked at or took a few days off when it initially hurt, maybe we wouldn't be in this situation.

Unfortunate, but hopefully he can back asap (healthy).

Looks like we figured out who Alex is on the forums... Bob Dole.

Seabass likes to talk in third person in order to display his mastery of the english language. :whistle

hasn't alex been battling these problems with his elbow all year??

if so that could be why his power numbers havent been there

I think the power hasn't been there this year because he realized that he is a shortstop that bats in the eight hole. Swinging for the fences every bat only yielded Alex one of the lowest OBP in all of major league baseball last year.

Despite the lower home run totals, he has been more valuable this year because he isn't going to make an out 8 out of 10 times.

You're joking right?

Singling in front of the pitcher does no damn good with 2 outs. Give me last year's Alex every day of the week.

His contract for next season just dropped $100K

This year's Alex would have been great if we had last year's Lowell and last year's Pierre.

2004:

67 Runs, .232 BA, 23 HR's, 79 RBI.

2005:

(projected): 52 Runs, .264 BA, 6 HR's, 53 RBI.

.264 isn't all that much greater than .232, especially when you hit 8th, aren't an exceptionally "timely" hitter, and you were counted on to be a "dangerous" hitter at the bottom of the lineup.

:thumbup

How the hell is he speaking in the third person if in that quote he used "I" twice?

Florida SS Alex Gonzalez said an MRI exam on his right elbow revealed a bone bruise. He'll rest it, then start throwing next week, he said.

No, Swift, I wasn't joking. Alex Gonzalez is not a power hitter. Last season was an anomaly and anyone who counted on Gonzo's power needs to ask themselves why. I'm a firm believer in players going with their strengths and Alex's strength is not power. In fact, last year, when Alex didn't hit a HR he was nearly a black hole at the end of the lineup. Almost a sure out.

There is a reason that Willy Mays Hays had to do 20 pushups everytime he hit the ball in the air.

In the case of a guy like Alex, OBP is the most important. If he singles in front of the pitcher, that is valuable because Pierre gets to lead off the next inning, not someone who is sure to start the inning off with an out. If you read run expectancy charts, one of the most critical aspects is what happens to the leadoff man.

But hey, obviously I must be joking because chicks dig the long ball.

Wait we are basing real baseball off a fictional movie.

Brilliant!

That wasn't part of my argument. It was an anecdote in the middle put there to hopefully get a chuckle out of fans of Major League.

So quick to grasp at straws when others don't agree.

Alex has had one of the worst OBPs in the majors over the past 4 or 5 years. :plain

OBP is more important for top of the order guys, while Slugging is more important for bottom of the order guys. It's pretty well accepted.

You're really freaking dense if you compare Alex Gonzalez to Willie Mays Hayes. OBP is not valuable at the bottom of the lineup, it's slugging. If Alex were an OBP machine, he'd be hitting in the 2-hole, as it is, his career OBP is under .300 (.287), and while this may be a season that he surpasses his career high (which is .313, he's right now at .319), it will also be a season in which he is projected to set career lows in HR's, and runs scored. That .006 jump in OBP sure is worth it though...let me tell you.

Oh, and last season wasn't an aberration, if anything, it was an understandable progression. He went from 14 HR's in his rookie season of '99, had three years where he battled injuries, came back healthy in '03 to hit 18 HR's, and then hit 23 last season. Hell, even with three bad seasons ('00-'02) his career average for HR's in a season is 16. So, if 7 over your career average is a substantial aberration, what is 10 below your career average? Expected?
