September 11, 200520 yr After the series lost to the phils, anything less than a split against houston will effectively end our playoff run IMO. Thoughts?
September 11, 200520 yr No it wouldn't. If both the Fish and Astros lose today, The Marlins winning at least one game in Houston puts us 2.5 behind.
September 11, 200520 yr not officially but it certaintly wont help, this next series will swing the balance of power to the winner to take and hold onto the wild card slot. We are still .5 back after Houston loses today (hoping so, they are down 4-0 late, no jinx, knocked on wood). We havn't lossed any ground from the Philly series, but now its the time to gain ground and get that wild card spot.
September 11, 200520 yr Realistically, any less than a split, and we're on life support. Mathematically, we'd be fine. With the way they're playing and pitching right now, a split might be too much to ask. Dontrelle, Beckett, Burnett (?), Vargas (?).
September 11, 200520 yr Aside from a short 2-game series with St. Louis, we're the only decent team Houston gets to face the rest of the year. We need to win that series to maintain a solid chance at the wild card. Anything less than a split and we're long shots.
September 11, 200520 yr So if we lost 3 of 4 and were 2.5 games out, we'd be eliminated? I disagree. A perdicament, yes but it's hard for me to talk elimination in that situation. That being said, just get the split fish. Go get em

Go get em 941098 Given the number of games on the road, and that we still have to play in Atlanta's house of horrors (at least for the Fish) the only series that you can look forward to in the next 10 days are the Mets, and even they've given us fits at Shea this year. And plus, if we can't beat playoff quality teams to get to the playoffs, do we really want to go through the embarassment that will be the Cardinals in the first round if we back-door it into the wild-card? I'd like to earn the playoffs, not hope to simply be the lesser of three teams playing poorly at the end of September.
September 11, 200520 yr we need atleast a split. If we drop 3 out of 4, I think you can pretty much leave the marlins for dead
September 11, 200520 yr The bright side of the weekend is that we did not lose any ground on houston, and now we can put everything behind and play them

September 11, 200520 yr how bout our team just grow a pair of testicles and actually perform. 941111 :thumbup
September 11, 200520 yr The bright side of the weekend is that we did not lose any ground on houston, and now we can put everything behind and play them 941109 Just to argue the other side of the coin. If we had take 2 out of 3 or even swept (which, to be honest, you could say isn't too unrealistic considering we had a lead in game one with AJ, and we beat up on Myers), we could go split in Houston, or win 3/4 and start printing playoff tickets. Up through August, after a weekend like this you "dodge bullets," now, I think we're simply wasting opportunities.

September 11, 200520 yr It would have been nice to win today, but it's not the end of the world. The Phillies are still 1 game behind us and we're only half a game back of Houston.
September 11, 200520 yr This week could very well decide who will get the wild card. Then again, the Marlins could still be .5 out of the lead at the end of the week. We'll just have to stay tuned.

Burnett vs. Clemens Vargas vs. Pettitte
September 11, 200520 yr I don't really think our schedule is any harder than Houston's, especially after this series. I expect the Cubs, Brewers, and Pirates to play better ball than the Mets and Nats from here on out. Those teams haven't had that much to play for for a while now, so they'll just be out there with nothing to lose. The Nats and Mets, meanwhile, are about to fall out of the race completely, and they'll be just going through the motions and dealing with disappointment. Our first series against the Braves will probably be tough, as well Houston's 2 game set against STL. But we end the season with ATL at home. I just think ATL will be setting up for the playoffs, giving a lot of September call ups a look, and giving their best players and pitchers a rest. We just have to play our best fundamentall baseball against Houston and whatever happens, happens. Houston may outplay us, but let's not beat ourselves. And that means Beckett and especially Burnett have got to maintain their focus throughout their starts.

Anything less than a split and we're long shots. 941072 While it's true Florida and St. Louis are the only teams the Astros will face with winnig records, they haven't exactly done well against their remaining opponents. Record this season vs. remaining opponents Florida 1-2, 4 games remaining Milwaukee 7-5, 3 games remaining Pittsburgh 6-6, 4 games remaining Chicago, 4-5, 7 games remaining St. Louis, 3-11, 2 games remaining So they have losing records against teams in 13 of their remaining 20 games, and they would be expected to win 9 of these games based on previous meetings.
September 11, 200520 yr If Atlanta has the division wrapped up in a few weeks, they might rest their starters and some regulars against us the last series.
September 11, 200520 yr forget the phills series ... the first game is HUGE phillie seemed to build off that win, especially after what had happened vs Houston go out there and win

If it actually worked out that way Houston would end up with 85 wins and Florida 86.
