Pinella Done in Tampa

Featured Replies

Lou Piniella's rocky tenure in Tampa Bay appears to be over.

Two sources speaking on condition of anonymity told The Tampa Tribune that Piniella will not return as the Devil Rays manager next season.

According to the Tribune, the Devil Rays will buy out the remaining year of Piniella's four-year deal. Piniella will receive $2.2 million of the $4.4 million he was to have received in 2006. The Rays will also pay $1.25 million in salary deferred from Piniella's first season in 2003.

Piniella will be free to take another managerial job next season, but has hinted he may take the season off, the Tribune reported.

Now he could come to Miami! :mischief2

::forwards to Jeffrey Loria::

Please come to Miami.

Too bad. Lou is something of a local celeb in St. Pete, and he's worked his butt off ever since he came; but the FO simply refused to give him a fighting chance in hell.

He'll soon find another job, for sure. But I don't think he'd fit well with the Marlins. He reminds me too much of McKeon's style, which, in itself, is not necessarily a bad thing, except that what I think Florida needs is a different approach -- a change of pace, if you will.

I don't really know if he'd be successful in any other job, I think he's a great coach but this job may have taken too much out of him.

I will take him down here, I still would like him or one or two others hmm.

it is close to tampa at least

if jack leaves then i want lou to coach here.

i dont want another manager until jack says that he is finished.

If jack leaves its on his own terms, then we can bring in lou who i think can be very successful here.

He's going to go wherever he feels he can be the most competitive, therefore Cincy, Detroit, and other teams are totally out of the question.

Marlins are one of the only *good* teams where our managerial situation is uncertain for 2006, so if Jack doesn't return then we'll obviously be the front runners in hiring Lou, and i'm sure he'd like to stay close to his home in Tampa anyways.

Thank God.

Im tired of him playing Chris Singleton over Joey Gathright.

And that sums up exactly why I don't want him here.

I love people who still think he's a savior.

Damon Hollins power activate!

Good Riddance.

Agreed Joe.

By FAR the most overrated manager in baseball, and overrated figure in Devil Rays history, and weve had alot of those.
