Liberal and Conservative?

Featured Replies

The question I pose to you today, is, "Is it possible to be liberal and have some, decidedly, conservative views?" I have heard so called liberals that I know call me out on "How can I be a liberal with such conservative views?" or " You aren't a liberal at all because you are religious!"

FYI, the view that I hold rather conservatively are Israel and issues arising with Israel. As well as being coming from a conservative Jewish family so I hold my religion closely to me.

I didn't realize that there was a rule in the world all of a sudden where you can't have a majority liberal view, but can't hold conservative views on other subjects.

Please, I want to hear other people's views on this, do tell.

Yes, certainly. I'm a liberal (I think/guess?) that holds some economically (in certain areas) conservative views.

Sure.

Im very much a conservative and I am slightly for abortion and gay marriage, too of the bigger issues that tend to draw a line inbetween people.

You're allowed to believe what you want to believe and not be labeled for it. Any liberal that accuses you of hypocrisy becuase you are religious is an idiot. Just like any conservative that accuses a liberal of being, by default, not religous is an idiot. Every issue has a distinct view on what people think is effective. Sometimes thing tend to fall in place but Isreal-Palestine is way off the scales. Ive said it before. There are uber "conservatives" that hate Isreal and there are uber "liberals" that hate Palestinians. I just dont see how that issue can be organized into existing categories.

I am what most on here consider to be a strict conservative, however I am not against Government Projects that are beneficial to a large amount of people who would benefit based on severe need or merit.

Of course you can be liberal and conservative, that's why there's moderates out there. If you claim to be conservative, you don't have to follow a long laundry list of beliefs.

Sure.

Same, except I'm very for gay marriage, and only for abortion because I believe if you outlaw it then it goes back on the streets and situations get bad.

I also think the government should look into how the legalization of marijuana and prostitution and gambling would effect things. They'd obviously get the tax money but I think they should study a city (NOT Las Vegas, as it's too established as that kind of town) and see how it plays out.

I am very socially liberal while I am very much politically conservative. The way I run my life is no way to run a country.

Libertarians unite!

It goes even further than just economically and socially conservative or liberal. You can be an economic conservative and still support some government programs. Labeling is stupid in general. Labelling has killed millions of people throughout history

Yes, I do think it's very possible. The terms liberal and conservative get thrown around a lot, but they really aren't a good description of anything. I'm liberal, but only a little left of center in some places.

And then trying to define the terms s even more fun. For example Mussolini was a right wing dictator so hes an ultraconservative but then you have those militiamen in montana that are against all forms of government, and theyre also ultraconservative. Which is why such labels are pretty stupid anyway

I have many conservative views, but I was very much a Kerry supporter in the last election because I don't like being lead into a war by a president with no real military experience.

As for the religious part... My ex-girlfriend came from a very liberal family. They were big Michael Moore fans and everything, BUT they are also very devoted Christians. I don't see why being liberal would mean you can't be religious. Some people use the church to speak against some liberal views and morals, while you can also use the church to back some of the liberal values. While some conservatives might kick gays out of church, liberals would be more likely to welcome them because we are all sinners. We can't discriminate sins... though I guess I wouldn't want a rapist or a child molester in my congregation. :-/ I guess that would be more of a safety issue though.

Of course - it's totally possible and acceptable.

The only people who benefit from the lazy, devisive, 'cookie-cutter' labelling of 'liberals' and 'conservatives' are the self-serving media and politicians. The fact is, they like everything black and white, because it makes it easier to get points across and whip up sound-bites. It's probable that there are relatively few genuine, textbook 'liberals' and 'conservatives' - intelligent people, with the capacity for meaningful thought are just too complex to be pigeon-holed like that. Unfortunately, such introspection is missing from millions of voters, so they follow the belief that the two are mutually exclusive.

I personally am mostly liberal. I don't know about fiscally, all I know is I'm a big fan of Clinton's economical ideas.

I tend to turn to a Ferris Bueller quote when thinking about labels.

Ferris: "I did have a test today. That wasn't bulls***. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, so who gives a crap if they're socialist? They could be fascist anarchists - that still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, 'I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.' Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus and I'd still have to bum rides off of people."

A lot of my life philosophies lie in movie quotes... :p

You can be neither conservative or liberal also, some people are hardcore centrists to a fault.

I think if you really break what individuals believe in you will get some serious mish-mash results.

For example I am not Conservative in general but while Conservatives want to be "tough" on terrorism I want to grill them on my barbecue and eat thier flesh and wear thier lovely caramel skin as a cape. f*** the Geneva Convention I WANT TO TORTURE AND EAT THEM!!!!!!
