From Prosportsdaily.com

Miami Herald (registration required): "After pumping a franchise-record $65 million into a collection of players who underachieved, the Marlins of 2006 might not be anything like the team that struggled just to finish above .500 this season. They probably won't be as pricey."

Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel: "The Marlins will seek more 'payroll flexibility,' as Beinfest likes to say, through trades and letting free agents walk. With Lowell, the Marlins can either attach a more coveted piece to him or eat a large portion of the $18 million he's owed."

Washington Post (registration required): "There is already talk of a salary purge in Florida, where sleek center fielder Juan Pierre is eligible for arbitration and likely to receive a hefty raise. There is a distinct possibility the Marlins will decline to tender Pierre a contract, thus making him a free agent."

Arizona Republic (registration required): "There is speculation a trade could be made for Florida's Paul Lo Duca, whom Arizona tried to get when he was with the Dodgers. Possible free agents include Ramon Hernandez of the Padres and Bengie Molina of the Angels."

:plain

And you believe most of this media speculation from either moronic local media or biased out of market media why exactly?

as much as i like pauly...

give me bengie molina!

You really think the Angels are going to let him go without a fight?

I'd take Ramon Hernandez in a heartbeat.

The media in other markets always speculate there will be a salary purge with the Marlins. They have nothing to back it up, they just kind of think it will happen every year.

Exactly, this happens almost every single year.

Beinfest and Loria have a history of proving the media wrong, some of you guys really need to have a little faith...

this is all speculation, we will know soon. Right now I'm 50/50 on my expectations of them raising or lowering payroll.

If they do lower, they will piss some people off. Mostly season tix holders

I know they'd piss me off.

I had no problem renewing on September 1, but it was with the understanding that there'd be a commitment to keep the status quo. Don't bend your bread-and-butter as a franchise over backwards and then rip the carpet out from under them...it just doesn't bode well for the long-term.

Crap piled on top of more crap.

Unless you expect Loria and Beinfest to sign Steve Nebraska's Mexican League manager to run the onfield operations, the first thing that has to be understood is that no legitimate managerial candidate is going to consider coming in here if the team is about to be blown up.

I doubt even a rookie manager like Mordy or Allenson, or heck even a veteran minor league manager like the Isotope's Treanor, would want to take on all the aggravation and guaranteed failure, just so they could say they were an MLB manager, if the above-mentioned moves took place.

Loria and Beinfest are smart enough to know that if they want to lure Gonzalez or Girardi or Valentine or fillintheblank, they have to hand him an at least a very competitive team.

More than any year previous, Beinfest has to deliver. For the owner, for new manager, for team itself, and the fans. If Beinfest doesn't give the sales department something to sell in the off-season (read, moves start the second the WS is over) after imploding in 2005, this franchise can forget about getting to 2,000,000 in sales next season.

So when you read all this crap, see it for what it is, and know that whoever is writing it doesn't have the faintest idea what they're talking about.

just get Willingham 400+ at bats in 06

*gets in the obligitory Willingham 4 Prez post*

How amh people here honestly think Loria will spend money to keep players? People get a clue....Some of your favorite players will likely be gone but it aint bad since Beinfest makes the right moves.

If we're gonna blow up this team, might as well let Willy catch.

Eh, there are too many chicken littles around here and in the press. Some who have ulterior motives to hope (and publish) these "rumors" to be true. Those Dolphins or Canes backers. Those No Stadium folks. Those 'Florida/Miami doesn't deserve baseball' folks. Those Loria haters. Etc. Etc. Etc. We have many enemies. Don't let them infect the discourse.

I may not agree with all the moves or have the same level of trust some do in our talent advisors and negotiators. However after the past two years, we probably need an overhaul. Not bring on more and more veterans onto a talented yet disappointing team.

Loria > Beinfest

He'd either be dead or on the DL by June.

And if you had to watch him play, you by mid-April

Right ....

I'm a baseball hater......................

Some people are in denial about Loria.

In no way am I saying the team doesn't need, to use RFerry's word, an "overhaul", but it won't be accomplished by trading LoDuca and installing Willingham as the starting catcher (thinks Ramp knows what I'm saying).

My guess is the Fish will trade defense for offense in the off-season, up and down the lineup.

Why does Beinfest make the right moves?

Signing Pudge and Delgado were no-brainers, and the core of the '03 team was largely left over by Dombrowski.

However, he's made many moves that left people scratching their head in '03, perhaps history would be viewed much differently if he didn't win the World Series. I mean, look at the deals that he tried to make that didn't go through, or even some of the ones that did, they read like a police report: Derrek Lee for Jeff Conine (back in '03), AJ Burnett for a bunch of role-players (fill in the names here), Ugeth Urbina for two absolute blue-chip prospects for Urbina to be a set-up man, Cliff Floyd for a bunch of nobodies (Pavano's '04 was a fluke, and Pavano wasn't even the key to the deal, Justin Wayne was), even to an extent the Clement and Alfonseca trade (at the time everyone thought it was a payroll dump, and Dontrelle was never, no matter what you hear in retrospect, expected to be what he is now...that move was all about clearing salary).

I have so much more faith in Loria wanting to be competitive than in Beinfest making the right moves.

I'm thinking the same, that's why Nomar is so damn appealing.
