October 19, 200521 yr Let's not jump to conclusions yet (consider the source), but I do believe this is the best news I've heard all summer.
October 19, 200521 yr yayayay would that be an incentive for burnett to sign with them now maybe over the nats?
October 19, 200521 yr The latest from ESPN: Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone will not be joining Joe Torre's staff next season, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney confirmed Wednesday. Newsday, citing a person familiar with Mazzone's thinking, reported Wednesday on its Web site that the pitching coach decided to end negotiations with the New York Yankees Wednesday morning. Mazzone is still a candidate to join the Baltimore Orioles, or he could still return to Atlanta. The Yankees are looking for a replacement for Mel Stottlemyre, who is not returning to the Bronx next season. Other possible candidates include Yankees bullpen coach Neil Allen, Yankees scout Joe Kerrigan and Columbus pitching coach Gil Patterson. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner also might try to persuade former New York star pitcher Ron Guidry to take the job. Mazzone, who turned 57 Sunday, has been with the Braves organization since 1979. He had a brief stint as Atlanta's co-pitching coach in 1985, then returned as the sole pitching coach in June 1990 after Bobby Cox was hired as manager. The Braves have perennially been among the NL leaders in ERA, but they dropped off to sixth this season (3.98). The team was plagued by injuries to the starting rotation and a dismal bullpen that went through three closers.
October 19, 200521 yr Now AJ signs with them and turns into Cy Young... AJ can do anything he wants as long as its not in the NL :thumbup
October 20, 200521 yr I read somewhere Mazzone in Atlanta contributes to the staff having .50 of a run less in their team ERA.
October 20, 200521 yr Author yeah, here is a study on the "Mazzone effect".. about a 0.50 worth of ERA is clipped off simply by working with Mazzone. http://bradbury.sewanee.edu/wordpress/inde...-is-leo-mazzone Someone did a similiar study on Baseball Primer, and nobody but Mazzone had much of an effect.
October 20, 200521 yr OMFG, the team has finally realized pitching is sorta important. :o :notworthy *dies*

October 20, 200521 yr Mazzone and the O's manager Perlozzo grew up together in western Maryland. Still, I doubt this. Mazzone has a good position with the Braves, pretty much gets all the credit (although he received barely any from Scouts Honor*) and none of the blame. Rosenthal isn't completly unbiased, and who knows what to make of his source(s). Plus it's the offseason with plenty of time for things to change. Just Tuesday the Washington Post had reported that a source said the O's were interested but had not contacted revered pitching coach Ray Miller if he can (he's had surgery mid-season) or was willing to return. One of the constant criticisms of Baltimore's front office over recent years has been their slow approach to things. I doubt if they've even sat down and talked to Miller yet. * I have a theory on that. Mazzone has been credited mainly with two things throughout his career with the Braves: 1. teaching veterans new tricks and 2. stressing control and keeping the ball on the outer-half. The scouts have nothing to gain from the success of these veterans. They receive no credit for finding or signing them. If you read baseball books and journals, you'd know a scout is only as good as the guy(s) he's signed and his relationship with those in position to hire/fire him. And traditionally scouts focus on physical ability or tough bulldog attitudes rather than the command or willingness to pitch to weak contact Mazzone likes. The sources for Bill Shanks' book obviously wouldn't as quite enthralled with him or his role in the team's success.
October 20, 200521 yr Is pitching coach of the Orioles an upgrade over Atlanta? Mazzone grew up with Perlozzo...he's from Maryland (as rferry said earier). He must be really good friends with the guy to leave the Bravos.
October 20, 200521 yr Mazzone was only making around $165,00 with the Braves, he could be tripling his salary with the Orioles.
October 20, 200521 yr Is pitching coach of the Orioles an upgrade over Atlanta? I'm sure he's getting paid a pretty penny to go to Baltimore
October 20, 200521 yr Is pitching coach of the Orioles an upgrade over Atlanta? If you already have one ring, it isn't likely you're going to win another in the next 2 years with either team, might as well go to where you're happiest...plus the money's probably a lot better.
