I like this part of the article. Me too. You like what? Getting Patterson for Pierre? You gotta be kidding me. Unless we are getting pitching prospects or something of that sort, which I doubt, I don't see how this trade can be "liked" by anyone. Please explain to me what we gain from it. I wouldn't do Patterson for Pierre straight up either. The key word that I read was "involve" and took it to mean more than a straight up CPat for Juanpy swap, in which case I'm in favor of the deal, provided what comes along with Patterson is worthwhile.

Those runners who get extra bases and score easily from 2nd base would really be what the Marlins need to put us over the top next season. Yeesh, I hate having to do research outside of school, but what the hell (I'm in a controversial mood): 2002- 153 games, 142 K's 2004- 157 games, 168 K's 2005- 126 games, 118 K's (we'll give him 20 more K's through 150 games, so 138 K's) In his 3 full seasons, he averaged ABOUT 150 K's, a fary cry from the 200 + exaggeration (and yes I know it was an exaggeration) But let's face it, he's NOT a leadoff hitter. He's only 26, which means he has a lot of time to learn as well. Stick him in the 6th hole, and he'll strike out less. Teach him not to go yard every at bat, and he'll strike out less. Get Joe Girardi to talk to him a bit, and he'll strike out less. BUT, nothing in the world can help Juan Pierre throw the ball harder or farther. The Marlins have a leadoff hitter in Castillo, 30 (and more if Andino plays). The small ball of 2003 worked because the Marlins lacked pop to make a lethal attack work. Check it out, folks: the Marlins have two legitimate power hitters in the middle of the lineup--something they've never experienced. The reason their attack didn't work this year is BECAUSE Pierre had a very bad OBP season. Without him on base, the power hitters didn't get a chance to produce. So there goes that tactic. STick Patterson in the 5th or 6th hole and you have another guy with pop behind more guys with pop behind a couple of good contact hitters (Castillo, Andino....whoever we get in the offseason, really) Contact hitting and speed can be replaced....Power coupled with speed comes at a luxury, methinks.
