Albert Pujols wins 1st NL MVP

Featured Replies

Though I do think D-Lee got robbed, Pujols has earned it.

Congratulations to the Cardinals for having the best hitter and best pitcher*.

So in theory, are we penalizing someone because their GM makes better moves to supply talent to a team and prepare them for a WS?

Sort of - but not really. Again, look at ARod's first two MVP awards. He won them both on a team with a losing record and that is extremely rare. In order to win an MVP award on a non-playoff team, you have to absolutely blow everyone else out of the water with your stats. Otherwise, the rationale goes something like this: if you didn't contribute to a team that made the playoffs then, in the grand scheme of things, how valuable is your contribution? It's all about results...

With that said, I thought Pujols deserved the award anyway.

1. ARods team made the playoffs this year

2. Andruw Jones team made up of a ton of rookies made the playoffs and won their division

I think I was more mad about Miguel Cabrera coming in 5th instead of 4th than I was about Pujols beating out Jones. I seriously thought that it was like for sure going to be Andruw....I never even considered that Pujols would win...but I dont think there is reason to really get mad about it...because Pujols has been so good the past few seasons...he deserves it

Well.... Pujols and Carpenter join Bonds/Drabek ('90), Sandberg/Sutcliffe ('84) and Wills/Drydale ('62) as the only NL CY/MVP duos from the same team to not make the World Series.

Tejada/ Zito 2002

Edit: Never mind, missed the "NL" part

Basically what I'm saying is, the Braves owe more to the Marlins and Phillies than they do to Andruw Jones.

Come on now. The Braves were every bit as dominant in their division as the Padres were in theirs... :mischief

I'm happy for Albert. He's deserved it in years past but was blocked by Bonds.

Andruw will have his time. And so will Cabrera.

I don't know if Andruw will win an MVP. What is he - a career .267 hitter? He also averages somewhere around 130 K's per season. Those are two completely underwhelming numbers that voters definately look at. He's also a guy who averages just over 30 HR per season until last year. Was that a fluke or the "real" Andruw Jones?

We'll see about Cabrera. If he keeps progressing like this - he'll definately win some serious hardware.
