August 29, 200322 yr This whole thread is ridiculous. I cant believe how fickle some of you 'fans' are - and I mean to use that term without the fanatic etymology it is assigned. I mean people who stand behind their team, and those of you who dare say Willis is mediocre or that he is average at best just dont understand this sport. The kid is only 21, and has the heart of a champion. The best threads to read out there are by JBurque right now on this topic. If you dont follow what he is saying, then you are just a fair-weather fan and dont understand what is really going on. Good post with the article, AJ. A good thing for these doubters/haters to read. I am a little displeased with this line though: ...a beacon of hope for America's young black athletes who might have thought basketball or football was their only path to the fame and fortune of professional sports. Is that really necessary? But anyway, a good illustration of how this kid IS special. Now you losers who doubt Willis probably werent really with us all along when we made this push to get the WC in the first place. I remember starting the damn thread for the WC back in May! Because I didnt want to give up on this season, and I am not going to give up now...and this team wont quit.
August 29, 200322 yr I dont mind losing. What I cant stand is basically rolling over to your opponents for an entire 9 game roadie.
August 29, 200322 yr If 11-5 is hitting the wall then damn it, I want all the Marlins pitchers to hit that wall. Can we please stop using W/L record as the best indication of a pitchers talent?
August 29, 200322 yr Can we please stop using W/L record as the best indication of a pitchers talent? I am not using it as a talent level indicator. I am using it as a results indicator. Willis is 11-5, there are some teams that would dream of having a starter do that in a season, Willis has done it in less time than that.
August 29, 200322 yr Dontrelle is still young, still inexperienced, and usually there is a time when pitcher's get figured out and start to struggle a bit, then after a while the pitcher starts to be effective again after adjusting. It'll be the same with Willis.
August 29, 200322 yr dontrelle mania is just beginning i can tell you that. Yes and we all know you have loads of cred.
August 29, 200322 yr I really think Dontrelle is going to have to learn a new pitch if he's going to become a star in this league in the future. He really needs an off-speed pitch. That being said, if dontrelle gets his pinpoint control back this season, then I think he will start getting back to his form before his slump. Most of the time he's had one bad inning where he's thrown 30-40 pitches and that has screwed his whole outing.
August 30, 200322 yr So, I take almost a month off from visiting this message board to move back to Miami and put everything together at my new home and this is what I found out: a new breed of HATERS!!! All of the sudden the gurus of baseball (meaning all of you who say Willis is a mediocre pitcher) are telling us "we told you so," or the always used-phrase "I knew this since the very beginning." The very beginning of what? I remember all of you (the gurus) praising every pitch Willis threw and celebrating every game he won. When, at what point of this story, did you forget that pitchers are allowed to be humans, at least for a couple of games? The guy has never been in a season 162 games long, with a team close to being in the playoffs, with all the hype and media that surrounds him, and all the expectations from fans and teamates. Let's not forget to mention that he met his father for the first time after 19 years, or that, by the way, he is 21 years old... I would like to know how many of our gurus would be able to accomplish so much at such a young age and still be Cy Young material. Give him a break! The guy was lights out in the minors and is an excellent pitcher in the big leagues. Check his stats if you don't trust me. Yes, hitters are figuring him out, but he is going to be capable of adjusting: it is called a learning experience. And when he does adjust, I expect you all new breed of HATERS to praise him again. Anyway your behavior is very predictable, although some might believe you are also capable of adjusting... or not! :w00t Go back to hate D Lee. Oh, btw, Willis is not the only one pitching bad or the only one to blame for the recent slump: he only shows up every 5 games or so. Our entire lineup is hitting below the mediocrity level. I am pretty sure we can all hate someone else: take your pick.
August 30, 200322 yr I think most of us can agree his stuff is not electric, but his command and delivery are his strong points. Its highly possible that he is wearing down which is affecting his command and delivery. Hes capable of being a very good #3 starter with the ceiling high enough for more. ear hits the nail on the head when hes says Willis MUST make an adjustment. But if hes worn down what we are seeing now is probably what we will get which is why we acquired Helling.
August 30, 200322 yr I was watching replays of him during his performance during the Pirates series. It seems that he doesn't have a consistent release point. Or it could just be that he is getting hit with fatigue. Or.....His odd delivery could have just been throwing hitters off,and he has been found out. :plain
