Should I or Shouldn't I.....

Featured Replies

its that time of the year again where i register for my classes next year. and my algebra 2 teacher reccomends that i take precalculus over the summer in a 2 and a half week course for 7 hours a day. :banghead If i take that over the summer i can take calculus AP for my senior year. What should I do? Does that sound like a really tough work load to do because i don't want to killl myself. My gpa and psat scores indicate that i can handle it but then i can't forget the procrastinaion ann laziness factor. :mischief

any advice....

Don't do it. You only wanna take AP Calc your senior year if you're definitely ready. One quick course over the summer will make you miserable and you definitely won't truly grasp the concepts.

Very scary words there, my dear.

I wouldn't do anything for 7 hours a day for 2 1/2 weeks. You would run out of steam after the first week.

TOTAL BURNOUT! :banghead

not knocking anyone at all here, but I have a question.

what kind of work do the math people on the boards want to do when they get out of college? I'm a very motivated person when it comes to my career but I sure didn't need that heavy math to succeed! That sort of stuff would make my brain pop. I think the highest level I completed was pre-algebra before I said screw it. I use math in my career daily to run the business but not to the level that many of you guys are at.

I look at it this way...if I can figure out the formula of a pitcher's ERA or someones BA, I'm happy.

If you want to do something with math, I'd recommend it heavily.

If you're decent at math and semi-dedicated, I'd recommend it.

If you plan on going to a college that gives AP credit, the AP calc exam is a breeze. I got a 5 on it and I'd hardly consider myself a math whiz.

If you're just doing it to do it or because you think having AP calc will help your standing, I'd advise against it.

We had an Calc AB past AP exam as our midterm this year. They must not do much in AB, because that thing was the easiest midterm I took this year.

Apparently this topic was important enough to attract the likes of not only Stu Scott, but also Stephen A. Smith himself!

Calculus is a pretty easy subject to begin with.

Well, theres only two things you need to know how to do. :thumbup

where are you looking to go for college?

i don't know you at all, but i'd tell you to take as many AP's as possible next year. that means get off your ass and take precalc over the summer.

"take 8 AP classes next year even though you only have 7 slots, if you dont take AP Am. hist. youre going to hell...AP AP AP" :banghead :lol

If you really want to go to a good medicine school, you'll going to have to put effort into school so you can go to UM. Otherwise, you can slack off like I did and only take 6 AP's your senior year and go to UF for free.

Personally I don't see the need for taking Calculus in High School unless you plan to major in Math. Most people struggle a bit with the concept of Calculus, so it's best to take it at a slower pace to really understand it.

Well, you've clearly got career aspirations.

If it's true that your teacher says you're ready for precalc & AP calc, I'd say it's a total no-brainer to take them. Nothing looks better to colleges than somebody who isn't afraid to schedule a bunch of APs on his schedule. If you've always gotten good grades, you shouldn't be worried about doing poorly.

Regarding summer classes, what else would you be doing over the summer? Wasting your time posting on here? Admiring your buddy's wallpapers, avatars, and sigs? Working some menial job for pennies?

If you chicken out and decide not to take precalc, you better do something meaningful, e.g. spending a ton of time volunteering your ass off or getting a not-retarded job.
