Consider this Conine is here for this year and next year. Also RHP Jeff Allison(top pick 2003 draft) is pitching in single A starting next season. Bautista is a talent but remember the O's said they wanted DLee for Conine at the begin. Like I said before the team doesn't lack in talent down on the farm but to give-up Bautista hurts but the talent to replace it is still there. Levinski is not much of a lost. He has not pitch well all year and is fragile by some scouts..really hasn't recovered from his injury of arm.

 

Here's a question "IF" the Marlins resign Penny, Burnett and Beckett to extention would you consider this a bad move?

this team has pitching in the system still...and plenty.

D.Lee is most likely gone next year(Conine can replace him). Hopefully that frees up money to be spent elsewhere.

 

We're in a "Wild Card" race...yes right now. We may be trading our future away, but I'm not sure that having Levinski, Bautista....or Snare, Gonzalez, etc. guarantees that we would be in a "Wild Card" race in the future...with these guys.

 

Is it more important competing now? or hoping to be in a Wild Card race when and if these youngsters become good?

It's easy. If you want to have a chance to win this year, you do the deal. If you want to be a perrenial loser, you wait for Bautista, and wait for Bautista, and wait for Bautista and you hope when he finally comes up theres a team here that can win then. If not what good is he?

Great point. Yeah, you can make the arguement that Bautista MIGHT be a good MLB pitcher someday, but can you guarantee that the franchise will still be in SoFLa by then if they don't make moves like this?

Exactly Ed. This is about things much much bigger than an outstanding AA prospect. It's about securing a place for the Florida Marlins, not the Portand marlins or the Washington Marlins or the Mexico City Marlins. Ownership is playing out this hand and you hit the nail on the head, WE NEED TO WIN NOW !!!

I personally don't want Burnett back. We've been doing extremely well without him, and i don't see the point of getting him back if he's going to pitch at less than 100 percent.

 

Giving up a good prospect and an average one for an outfielder at the end of his career is a joke. We're not going to the World Series this year. If the season ended today, we'd have to play a best of five against the Giants, who we lost 2 of 3 to just the other week.

 

I'd rather have a highly-touted pitcher than an aging outfielder at this point. Bautista has many more years left than Conine does.

 

If we had gotten him for Nunez and Neal, then i wouldn't care about this. I don't think Conine is bad, i just don't believe he's worth two quality prospects.

I've already said this 400 times, but it bears repeating. If the Marlins don't make a move and then fall out of the race this site is full to the brim with posts whining that the FO recognized they had to do something and didn't.

 

Or do you all think that 32 year old role player Brian Banks was a suitable replacement in a lineup that is offensively anemic already?

FutureGM I don't think its about winning the WS, its about getting the fans trust back.. thats the bottomline and really you won't know that until the seasonticket renewals. The fans want to be given a chance, thats all

Good point. What I don't understand why are people out there still crying over the perennial high-ceiling prospects that never become major league players... I guess some people can never see the positive in anything the Marlins do...

You can't evaluate this trade fairly and accurately until you accept the realities of the situation we face.

 

If you'd rather watch the team fade out of the playoffs this year and then out of town completely by 2005 in the name of saving a few prospects who you'd thus never get to enjoy play then you're being completely irrational.

 

This trade tells the team that we haven't given up and we still believe in them. Wait till you see the streak we rip off.

 

This not to mention the flexability this gives us going into the offseason and next year. Conine is an affordable, proven veteran who we can plug in where needed.

I really hope you never become a baseball GM, seriously. I don't see what is the point you are making about Burnett, why don't you want back a guy who was you ace a year ago? Yes, he had reconstructive elbow surgery, but he is coming back stronger than before. Also, would you imagine a rotation that includes Burnett, Willis, Beckett, Redman and Penny? You can put Pavano as a reliever or trade Penny...

 

Also, the idea of Conine being at the end of his career has nothing to do with his production. He is batting in the 290's with 18 HRs and 85 RBIs, more than Cabrera, Hollandsworth, and Banks combined for god's sake. And let's not talk about your predictions...

 

And about quality... maybe Bautista was quality, but Levinski simply sucks. Go see their stats...
