*RF Jeremy Hermida played his first game out of class low A ball and struck out in all 3AB's for Albuquerque. Im not sure why they didnt just promote him to Carolina and bump someone up from there if Albuquerque was so desperate for OFs.

*LHP Scott Olsen continued his domination with 7IP, 3H, 0ER, 0BB, 9K

*1B Tom Merkle hit 2HR's in the Greensboro Bats doubleheader giving him 9 for the season.

*In the second game of the doubleheader RHP Yorman Bazardo pitched a complete game shutout (8IP, 8H, 0ER, 0BB, 4K)

*And my new favorite farm hand 2B Matt Erickson had 2 more hits and 2 more walks last night (2-5) to raise his batting average to .342 and OPS to .905 ...awesome for a 2B. He also now has more walks then K

*RHP Nic Ungs had a great start for Carolina (6IP, 6H, 0ER, 1BB, 4K) to lower his ERA to 3.52...Looks like Ungs is getting it together after getting bombed his first few starts.

*Donnie Bridges went (2IP, 0H, 0BB, 3K) to lower his ERA to 2.81

Good post. Thanks. Can Matt Erickson still be brought up? (Pardon my ignorance.) Is he ready? Does he also have time at third?

Hes split time at both positions, but doesnt have quite the range or arm that Hooper has which so far will limit him to the bench. He could be a September callup, but we are already so crowded it would take away ABs from guys who play in the postseason when we make it.

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing Erickson in Jupiter next Spring.

I was surprised to see Hermida get the call too. I thought Matt Padgett at AA would've been a good option.

btw:

ISOTOPES wrap up the PCL central division!!!

74-70

bring on NASHVILLE

Hermida got the call because Greensboro did not make the SAL playoffs. AAA needed a body (an OF) to replace Gerald Williams.

Padgett and his AA teammates are in the playoffs. The Jupiter Hammerheads are in the playoffs as well.

I don't see Hermida in AAA as a big promotion, just the best outfielder on the one team that didnt make the playoff to fill an open spot.

finally, I get to see a prospect instead of an old folks home...nice

If you mean can he be added to the (September) 40 man roster, the answer is yes. With the 'Topes and Mudcats both (probably in the case of Mudcats) going to postseason play you won't see a bunch of these guys until after their respective playoffs are over.

exactly....hermida was called up because teh isotopes needed a body.

he will be in A or AA ball next year. dont read too much into this people.

if castillo is not resigned...i think hooper or erickson gets first crack at the job, provided they dont bring in somebody for the spot.

I was reading the PB Post and The Hammerheads are in the FSL League Playoffs facing off against the St Lucie Mets.. And its said that the Mets (St Lucie) wont take a chance on Stokes or Kavourious in most of their atbats (mainly stokes)

FYI, Kevin Olsen (on ML rehab) starts game 1 for the Jupiter Hammerheads tonight.

Good points on why Hermida was sent to Albuquerque, they didnt cross my mind. I'd hope Hoop and Erickson get a shot in spring training because if we are going to let Castillo go in FA then we need cheap options to replace him so we can afford to sign our pitchers and Lowell. Although I'd almost rather keep Castillo then Lee depending on the salaries and because we have Conine. Castillo is turning into one the premier OBP guys in the league (.390 which is 3rd among second basemen). Derrek Lee is still hanging onto the potential tag and will no doubt have a career year wherever else he goes due to park factors. We just cant afford the big boppers in our financial state and 2B is a more important defensive position then 1B and Castillo ranks #2 there.

I also forgot to mention that Carolina OF Chris Aguila WON the Southern League batting title with a .320 average!

Sham,

As always thanks for the updates. They are greatly appreciated. Despite the recent trades it sounds like there is an abundance of talent at the lower levels of the farm system. It appears as if the last draft has already begun to pay dividends. I'm sure the success of some of the young hurlers was part of the motivation to trade Bautista and Levinski.

Beinfest has certainly gotten the most out of the Dempster & Floyd deals. His parlaying of Snare and Levinski (in part) into Ugie and Conine was another good use of some additional resources.

My pleasure malman...one other tidbit...Scott Olsen made BA's top 20 prospects revised at #19 ....

19. Scott Olsen, lhp, Class A Greensboro (Marlins)

Called the steal of the draft last fall by Marlins exec Dan Jennings, Olsen emerged in the second half as a consistent performer with stuff that rivals higher profile lefties Scott Kazmir, Cole Hamels and Greg Miller

Miguel Cabrera also made the top 20 at #2...

2. Miguel Cabrera, 3b/of, Double-A Carolina (Marlins)

He was so good in the first half, slugging .609, the Marlins needed to see him play just three games in left field before making the 20-year-old the everyday left fielder in Florida

woohoo. :lol

Shamrock I guess you see that the talent is not as thin as some thought.

but we just traded away our best pitcher in the system!!!!!

oh wait...pitching in the minors is our biggest strength.

damn.

Shamrock I guess you see that the talent is not as thin as some thought.

I still think its thin...next year will be the telling year.

Thanks for the update Sham, but I dont agree with you - I think we have loads of talent in the farm, of course mostly at lower levels, but that will work its way up. Besides, we got some good talent with the big club, and it doesnt look like we can work in too much PT anytime soon.

We lack depth at SS, C, 2B. These are the very spots we need filled for next season. We will most likely resign A-Gon but it would be nice to have a cheaper option pushing him from the minors.

Also Kevin Olsen made his first rehab start...at Jupiter in their first playoff game he went (5IP, 1H, 0ER, 0BB, 8K) I know he had a rough outing for Boston, but I think he can contribute to our bullpen/rotation at least next season.
