February 20, 200620 yr Real classy that they reissued #19 no questions asked. :plain What, they are suppose to retire the number because of Lowell??? :thumbup My dear friend Mr. Swift looks to spark controversy wherever he can find it.
February 20, 200620 yr Yea whos wearin Luis # this season? Anyone? What can you do... We have no tradition, SOMETHING WE NEED TO BUILD DAMMIT!
February 20, 200620 yr Real classy that they reissued #19 no questions asked. :plain What, they are suppose to retire the number because of Lowell??? Or Conine. #19 and #1 are the only two that really mean something to the franchise. Should at least hold off reissuing it, or give it to a meaningful player if necessary, then again, that's something a classy organization would do, so I'm not surprised. Seattle and Toronto have been around longer, and they have not retired any numbers. Obviously, it's not as big a deal to some people as they are to you; some think jerseys should only be retired for hall-of-famers that come from a team, others don't think they should be retired at all. But anything to take another shot at the organization, eh?
February 20, 200620 yr Having an opinion is stirring up controversy or simply unacceptable? Good lord, I'd love to be part of the sheep mentality around here. I wasn't demanding the damn thing to be retired tomorrow, I was just hoping that the number identified with both Mr. Marlin and the career leader in home-runs, RBI and a long time face of the franchise would be either kept out of circulation or given to a meaningful player. Paul O'Neill was a great player for the Yankees, not a hall of famer but a great player (with an equal tenure and similar power numbers in a Yankee uniform as Lowell here), and the Yankees have yet to reissue his #21, why the same treatment isn't given to Mike Lowell/Jeff Conine/Luis Castillo here is beyond me and indicative of what I feel to be a classless organization, or perhaps the rope-a-dope season ticket sales and glorified strippers shaking it before the first pitch do it better than this. And FYI, Eric Reed has Castillo's #1.
February 21, 200620 yr I don't get the "sheep mentality" comment. If anything, I'd say this board is 50/50 split about management. There certainly isn't an overwhelming majority that supports them.
February 21, 200620 yr Real classy that they reissued #19 no questions asked. :plain atleast they gave it to Elvis
February 21, 200620 yr Author Yusmeiro Petit was around earlier with Dontrelle.... I didn't get any autographs because the players said they couldnt during practice... I will be going back thursday which is the first official practice for the whole squad... Josh was looking good behind the plate, Tank and Megrew were throwing to him most of the time... It is amazing to watch Perry Hill do his thing with the pitchers (the technique he uses is pretty cool)... There was a funny moment during practice when Olsen was practicing his bunts and Vargas came over to take his turn bunting and Vargas goes "Im not sure I can swing it like he can" and Olsen resonded with "Even Dontrelle cant top me".... If anyone wants me to get some good pictures of any specific players, just let me know...

February 21, 200620 yr do organizations ever retire players' numbers while that player is still active in the Majors? If it happens isn't it traditionally done a few years after their retirement? fwiw, I don't see this as being disrespectful or not classy... and I'd rather see a coach with the number than a player on the field everyday.

They keep them out of circulation, like the Yankees with O'Neill and Pettitte and Red Sox with Clemens.
February 21, 200620 yr Silliness. Anyone who thinks Lowell's number should be retired ought to have their head examined (after a season and a half of abject failure). The same goes for just about every Marlins to date. Next thing you know someone will suggest we retire Ramon Castro's number, then maybe Jesus Sanchez. Castillo was a great ballplayer for much of career here but he's gone. Conine, no big deal. He's played as much of his career elsewhere as with the Marlins. Move on.

So one and a half bad years erase all of his career accomplishments? I dislike Lowell because of his '05 more than anyone on this board and even I know that's one hell of a dumb statement. For a team that has made it painfully obvious that extending a contract to a player beyond their arbitration years is taboo, a player with Lowell's career accomplishments should be recognized. Lowell is in the top 5 for every major offensive category, hits, OBP, slugging, OPS, at bats, runs, you name it. He's third in games played (behind only Conine and Castillo), second in AB's, second in runs, third in hits, first in total bases, first in doubles, first in homeruns, first in RBI, first in extra-base hits, and he was here for 7 seasons, second to only Castillo and Conine. It's highly likely that none of the Marlins on the current squad will exceed his tenure here, and only Cabrera realistically poses a threat to Lowell's lead in the career offensive categories. Forgive me for suggesting that a franchise that is famous for such violent roster turnover should actually make an attempt to honor three franchise mainstays, all of whom were quite accomplished in their careers here.

I think if you were to go through my three plus years here you would be hardpressed to find an anti-Lowell post in my body of work. When most here turned on Mike Lowell like mayonnaise on the beach I remained a supporter because he was a Marlin. Lowell is gone now, we have a new third baseman and a new team. I don't need a lecture on loyalty to the Marlins from you or anyone else, I simply disagree that his number should be retired and the same goes for Castillo and Conine. My loyalties remain with the team, not the individual players. Baseball isn't the same as when I grew up and lineups barely changed from year to year. I'm not about to abandon the Marlins or their current crop of players, win or lose, but at the same time I'm certainly not going to make gods out of mortals with feet of clay either.
