Pitching machine overpowers hitters

Featured Replies

From today's Palm Beach Post:

JUPITER ? The Marlins' prospects fighting for positions finally made their spring debut Tuesday in an intrasquad game. The biggest star? A pitching machine that recorded five strikeouts.

"The machine was outstanding,'' quipped Wayne Rosenthal, the team's minor-league pitching coordinator.

"It's filthy,'' said pitcher Randy Messenger, who watched with amusement as his teammates went down swinging.

Manager Joe Girardi wanted to save pitchers for exhibition games, so bullpen coach Pierre Arsenault fed baseballs into the machine from atop the mound.

"It (threw) all breaking balls to make it challenging. I don't just want to throw fastballs up and let them just whack them. I wanted them to work on things, to work on ground balls, cutoffs and relays,'' Girardi said.

The losers had to do chores for the winners and weren't in the mood to discuss the game.

"You can ask me about my off-season and you can ask me about my wife but just don't ask me about my performance today,'' said catcher Matt Treanor, one of the strikeout victims.

Yikes.

Still.....pitchers throw other pitches other then fastballs.

Five players -- Eric Reed, Matt Treanor, Jason Stokes, Ryan Jorgensen and Alfredo Amezaga -- swung and missed through strike three.

Yer all off the team. :p

Don't worry, none of them are starters anyway. :shifty

As long as it wasn't Hammer, Hermida, Jacobs, or Shadez I am okay with it.

yea but when u know a breaking ball is coming and your a freaking MLB player and you swing and miss, dig a hole and stick your head in it.......why do u think treanor was so upset....

Not many below the AA level, and very very few consistently even there

i wouldn't be too sure about that in regards to Reed.

The bowling machines we have at the Cricket centre go at 99mph, and have so much spin on the ball it moves like a beachball, if they are anything like that, im suprised it was only 5Ks.

Give the pitching machine a MLB minimum contract

I think it should be our closer.

:lol

Peter Gammons reports that Brian Cashman has offered Robinson Cano and Andy Phillips to Florida for the machine, but the Marlins are waiting on a response from Theo Epstein.

yea sometimes these pitching machines that throw curves and sliders are wicked...im talking like no major leager could throw...sometimes there pretty unhiittable...im mean granted i m play highschool ball and not a majorleager but the only tink i can imagine it as is Barry Zito's curve times 10
