here's what i could find on google news:

original rumor:

As if Joe Girardi didn?t have it bad enough, there?s already talk that stud lefty Dontrelle Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera are both going to be available at the trade deadline this summer because their contracts are about to go through the roof.

original rumor presumably being rehashed:

Action: The Florida Marlins reportedly already are making plans to move star pitcher Dontrelle Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera at this summer's trade deadline.

Reaction: Some team will strike gold with Willis, who might be the most entertaining pitcher in baseball today. Cabrera is a future batting champion. The Yankees figure to wind up with at least one of them.

right now it looks like there's just one original print source for the rumor, and the originator doesn't sound particularly credible.

if i see new info published in a legit print source, then i might start worrying.

Here's where it all started from:

But will the third baseman be too expensive for the Marlins if the team retains its "market correction" strategy next year?

General Manager Admin Beinfest declined comment when the question was asked Saturday.

Certainly not encouraging from Beinfest, but never has more "news" been made with a no-comment.

In between, MLBTradeRumors posted a rumor that Cabrera and Willis were available and ran with it. A NYC paper picked it up. Then the Daily Herald and other papers.

sorry the angels have some nice prospects.. but most of them are actually older then Cabrera here lol.

There is a reason why they are called prospects. They could just as easily be a bust.

Miguel Cabrera is the type of player you find once every 20-50 years for a team. He is a triple crown threat, a possible hall of fame career for him. He is the type of player that if they cant afford to Sign they dont deserve to have a team.

Plain and simple.

Is Cabs really THAT untouchable?? I mean, if we were able to get 5 or 6 of the top Angels prospects in return, we could stock our team for years. MacPhearson, Wood, Kenrick, Jared Weaver, etc. I'm not saying that we should pull the trigger, but I don't think that any player should be viewed as "untouchable" when the reality is that we are not going to truly contend for a few years.

I'm not a Cabs basher...I'm just saying....

If that kind of package were available around the time he's due for big money (not now), I think you've got to at least consider it. Nobody is untouchable, not even the great Cabs.

The problem is that this kind of package is NEVER around when he's due big money. The minute we are forced to pay him big bucks, we have our backs against the wall. Then, it becomes a bidding war against the teams willing to take on a HUGE contract, rather than trying to get the best (most) value for him. If you're going to trade Cabs, it has to be done this year or next year, because after that - he's making 5 Million a year in arbitration (like Willis), and teams know we'll take less.

Once again, I'm not saying trade him, but you have to pick your spots. Unless we got everything we want, I wouldn't trade him anyway. But to suggest that raping the Angels farm system would not be equal value doesn't pay respect to their top prospects, or give credence to the fact that their top prospects are seemingly at positions where the Fish are planning to start rule 5 pickups, etc.

By "big money" I don't mean big money in terms of the Angels (as in the last year of arbitration), but more big money in terms of the Marlins (first or second arbitration year). If he's going to be moved, this offseason would be a good time to explore something - though I'd rather see the Marlins go long term in a reasonable deal with him.

The Angels are a perfect team to trade with; their system is stocked. I would have absolutely no problem trading Cabrera and getting a package like Wood/Kendrick/Weaver or Wood/Kendrick (they're the two centerpieces)/Santana/Morales or Figgins. Of course, doing know would take away the last bit of fan base the team had. I think Beinfest once said it and I agree, no one can be untouchable, what if the Yankees come along and offer 5 MLB ready guys for Dontrelle? Can you image getting 4 or 5 top MLB ready guys at different positions? If we traded Cabrera to the Angels for one of the above deals, hell, we might be ready to compete NEXT YEAR, with or without Dontrelle.

No one should be untouchable, the right deal can always come along. But if they're moving they probably don't care about the fanbase here, so they don't have to worry about pissing them off.

amazing what happens with a simple no comment

It isn't a simple no comment though. That no comment means everything in the world. Last August or September if asked the same thing, I bet he would have said "Cabrera isn't going anywhere."

Then they said that about Carlos Delgado. Then he got traded.

If Beinfest said that Cabrera was staying the fanbase would be jumping all over his ass with "OMG U SED DAT ABOUT DELGADO 2!!!1!!1!one!!!" And to prove he's serious about it, they'd want him to sign Cabrera to a longterm contract. I can see articles by Berardino and Le Batard saying that exact same thing: If you're serious, pay him more than $475 K, give him a long term deal.

But Beinfest can't. He simply can't. He doesn't have the resources to pay out the nose for him, not this year. So in order to avoid the media/fan frenzy that would ensue had he said Cabrera was staying, he abstained from commenting.

Of course, that didn't work.

But the no comment was not a "simple" no comment. It spoke volumes to me. It said to me that Beinfest would love to keep Cabrera and will do everything it takes to do so and would love to promise that to us. But because of changing circumstances, something might happen, a la Delgado, and he'd be wrong to make us another promise he can't make good on.

Wow, you took a lot from no comment.

I personally took it to mean "I have no comment"

Well have we ever, before this, seen Beinfest abstain from commenting? It has to mean something, and that's what it meant to me. Take it for what it's worth.

I know, I was just giving you a hard time.

No one in the Marlins organization can say anything without it being spun into something negative anyway.

I know you were babii.

No, it means that it's not in the team's interests to show their hand.

The only people who they might alienate are those who think the club is out there offering Cabrera around. The same people who would complain about us getting back 10 all-stars for free. Not to mention the chipped paint on their seats. Or that the owners of the club are even thinking about their own financial stake. Sadistic whiners.

the reality is that few, if any, teams have enough to trade for cabrera. is there any player more valuable in all of baseball than cabrera? a 22 year old super-star that makes $475 this year and will probably not cost more than $5 million next season. and, for those of you that say his value will never be higher, mark my words, he will improve all his numbers this coming season. he's got the type of talent that doesn't need protection. this is the kind of player that could put up 12-13 straight .300+ 30hr+ 100rbi+ seasons and still not even be 35 years old at the end of it. the amount a team would have to give up for him will probably not be worth it even for teams with enough players to pull it off.

so, in essence, he's available at the right price, but the right price is exhorbitantly high. so high most teams can't possibly come close to meeting it.

It's amazing to me how many of you just want to laugh at this and think there's no chance of it happening. WHAT TEAM HAVE YOU BEEN ROOTING FOR THE LAST 13 YEARS???!!!! I'm a Marlins fan and I'm BEGGING any of you to name me 1, ONE PLAYER that this franchise has ever shown any kind of long term commitment to. Everyone with any kind of value either ends up getting traded in the middle of a contract or let go because they can't afford him. EVERYONE. And now you're all trying to laugh at any kind of rumor that Cabrera or Willis might be traded? You're blind. Flat out BLIND. I'm not saying it's gonna 100% happen or anything, but for some of you people to just laugh it off, think there's no way it's gonna happen, you're crazy. These aren't the first 2 "franchise" type players to come through this organization. If these guys get dealt in the next year or two, not one person here should be surprised.

Settle down Sally. I think most here just think a stadium deal will happen before it comes to the point that we have to let either of these guys go.

If it wasnt to get HanRam, Beckett would still be here. You trade special players for special players.

So wether they stay or go, at least we know something damn good should come in return.
