March 28, 200620 yr I love Lenny but he is finished, he is not what we need right now, we could easily hand those at bats to a young kid who can develope into one of our future pieces. We know he hit well, but we need to rebuild, that spot needs to be reserved for a young guy that will be with us in the future. You'd make a great GM, putting promising young players in position to get 70 ABs per year.

I don't think he's suggesting putting someone like Robert Andino in Harris's roster spot, but someone with a decent upside (Chip Ambres for example) that can actually play defense as well. Harris is a complete waste of a productive roster spot. Even if he can still hit some, it doesn't matter one bit to this season. Want to keep him for his supposed mentoring abilities? Hire him as a coach then.
March 28, 200620 yr I can't find any confirmation the Marlins have reacquired Chip Ambres. probably because we havent :mischief So when you included him in your (potential) roster, you were including him hypothetically. Silly me. :mischief2

March 28, 200620 yr Not to sound all Spike-ish here, but the sooner the Marlins realize that Moehler is just hurting the development of Johnson/Nolasco, the better off the team will be. Here would be my bench (carrying 12 pitchers): Olivo Treanor Amezaga Cepicky Harris Helms With Reed and Stokes among the first to be called up.
March 28, 200620 yr Here would be my bench (carrying 12 pitchers): Olivo Treanor Amezaga Cepicky Harris Helms Cepicky??? Come on he's a big oaf that hasn't done a darn thing any of the 4+, I repeat 4+, times he has been called up to the show. Yeah, he hit a grand salami... so what?

Cepicky & Reed will probably battle it out for the 4th outfielder spot. Reed could be of some use as a pinch-runner as well.

Then I guess, realistically, scratch Treanor...although I'd probably scracth Harris unless Girardi really feels he can play a position other than corner infield.

March 28, 200620 yr Author We don't really need a 4th OFer because when someone needs a rest Helms/Willy will play LF moving Aguila/Abercrombie to CF/RF depedning on who needs rest.
March 28, 200620 yr Isn't Helms also like our backup 1B? Or am I confused What is going on with Nate Bump? I must have missed something.
March 28, 200620 yr Author Isn't Helms also like our backup 1B? Or am I confused What is going on with Nate Bump? I must have missed something. Helms is our backup 1B primarily, but probably could get starts at 3B/LF. Bump had off-season labrum surgery and wasn't 100% during his spring outings.
March 29, 200620 yr Author Jason Vargas is a stalwart? He's pitched 73 innings in his career. I believe he'll be a cog in the rotation all year long. Can't say that for anyone else besides D-Train. So, yes. Just my opinion.
March 29, 200620 yr I am having a tough time justifying carrying a third catcher at this point. Let JW get 2/3 the starts and play LF on his "off" day. In this role he obviously could jump behind the plate in an "emergency". I am having a real tough time justifying a roster spot for Olivo. Yes, he had a flash of brilliance today, but I am afraid that was all it was, a flash.
March 29, 200620 yr He has some experince, JG says he does nto want him behind the plate. But if something were to happen to JW or MT, you pick up this new device called a telephone. And teh answerer of said phone then gets on something called an airplane (they go to every big (league) city in this great country, probably by game time tomorrow.
March 29, 200620 yr I think Harris is exactly what this team needs this year. We need a few guys on the team who can be there for the yungins when they need help. Moehler provides that for the starting pitchers, Herges/Lightenberg/Borowski will be there for the pen arms, and it naturally falls to Lenny to be there for the hitters. As much as Miguel might be the "veteran," he's still only 22 and has only been through two and a half seasons though they've been quite spectacular. Lenny's been around a long time, more than anyone else hitting wise save Girardi (actually, that's a good race, I'm not sure which broke in first) and can be there for the young guys when they fall into a prolonged slump.

I'm doubtful that any other team would carry him on their 25-man anyway. His supposed mentoring abilities don't outweigh the complete waste of a roster spot.
March 29, 200620 yr Eh, I'm willing to give Lenny the benefit of the doubt because he did perform last year, but he can't be a waste of a roster spot for simply being a good guy. Besides, a lot of the players have said they identify with Girardi pretty well and that Girardi acts a lot like one of the guys (running with the team, etc.). Veteran influence on the field is one thing (which is why that Castillo trade still burns big time for me), but I don't know how much Lenny as a pinch hitter is going to guide this group; or rather, how much more valuable he is than simply Girardi as a stabilizing force. However, as long as he keeps hitting, he's fine by me. :mischief
March 29, 200620 yr Author who is Lenny blocking anyway? Hitter McHomerson? Johnny O Doubles? The many potential waiver claims that could be made towards the end of spring training. It'd be safe to say all would be more useful than Harris.
