March 29, 200620 yr When will DW figure out that Olivo's K's will not help him or the Marlins win games. Obviously I have been a JW supporter, so I am asking the rest of you.... 1) What does Olivo bring to the party that no one else can provide? Is this stricly a #1 dictating who catches him? Has JW ever caught DW? It seems to me that Tuck and Girardi are please with JW and his progress (and we know that every game he gets through deepens that experience/progress). 2) Does anybody still consider JW a work-in-progress or is he 'your' starting day catcher (even though DW does not share that opinion)? 3) Who do you see as our #2 catcher? I think I would give the nod to Treanor. 3) If this keeps up, he will be premium "trade-bait" barring a stadium deal. GO FISH
March 29, 200620 yr I really want Hammer in left and Matt behind the plate. Did anyone go to the game today? When Olivo came to the plate the announcer said "Now batting Miguel Cairo" :lol Olivo looked back and laughed.
March 29, 200620 yr Did anyone go to the game today? When Olivo came to the plate the announcer said "Now batting Miguel Cairo" :lol Olivo looked back and laughed. Most announcers and commentators are incompetent. Here's the perfect example.
March 29, 200620 yr I agree with Holly as far as Hammer in LF, I still feel playing LF will cause less wear and tear on him physically as opposed to crouching behind the plate, and would give Hammer more AB's...but as long as he is in the line-up, I'm ok with it
March 30, 200620 yr If Willis bats 8th on those days, I'm fine with him choosing the lesser of two/three to catch for him. Just don't lose Willingham's bat to the outfield for the majority of the time. His bat while filling the catcher void is far too deadly to waste.
March 30, 200620 yr but when hes not filling the catcher void, he is filling the left field void. let him rest on a willis start.
March 30, 200620 yr JW can't catch every day, so 33 games or so of mandated relief from the catcher's spot will only help his offense. Those days he can play LF or DH in AL ballparks. The line up could be: Ramierez Hermedia Cabrera Jacobs Willingham Uggla Aguila Willis Olivo :whistle
March 30, 200620 yr imo C - olivio LF - willingham does put less strain on willi and always him to play more on the field and keep his bat in the lineup backup - treanor
March 30, 200620 yr I would like to see Willingham play behind the plate most of the time. He has been working toward this for three years, and there is no sense in throwing that away simply because we don't have a good left fielder now. It will be easier to acquire a LF'er in the future than a C with Willingham's bat. It is tempting to be short sighted in this, but it is not in the best interest of the organization. Stick with it; keep him a catcher. It will be worth it in the long run when we put together the next playoff run ('07, '08, '09...). Additionally, if we do make a surprising run this year and have a shot at the playoffs, we can acquire a LF bat late in the season close to the trade deadline (if not sooner).
March 30, 200620 yr All this bulls*** about "omg, play willy in LF to protect his fragile body" is getting out of hand. Yes, catching is very demanding on the body, and yes I agree Willy should be eased into the position with 1-2 starts in LF per week, but those advocating Willy to start in LF full-time to protect his body need to realize the waste of potential offensive stardom at catcher.
