For me the Carlos Beltran deal seems just as ridiculous, considering he only had one good year himself and was the most talked about thing in the media that year.

I disagree....the better GMs would never pay a player for one good year. It separates the good GMs from the bad ones.

Beltran was a very good player but he got one of the most tremendous contracts I've ever seen. I just don't believe he was worth the hype.
April 19, 200620 yr I agree that it's very suspicious that Beltre only had one good year, which is far better than his next best season. It reminds me a lot of Brady Anderson, who went from 25 home runs one year, to 51 the next. He never even hit 30 again after that.
April 19, 200620 yr Beltran was never "great" by any stretch of the word except for one postseason. At the plate, he's nothing more than slightly above average, and nowhere near worth the contract he recieved.
April 19, 200620 yr When a player who has always had a 'pedigree' finally seems to have put it together in his walk year, at a premium position, he's going to get a contract, good GM or bad. See: Pavano, Carl for further reference. I'd have given Beltre his money too if I had it to spend and needed a third-baseman. Beltran's a completely different story...hit .258 in a hitter's paradise in Houston and has never had a "dominant" .300 average it's always hovering in the mid/high 2's and his defense is overrated...probably the best baserunner of our generation though.

Beltran is a 5 tool player Hard to be a 5 tool player when your career batting average is .282. 30/30 potential is great, but it's really caused a gross overrating of players.
April 19, 200620 yr The problem with Beltran is that most of the people who think he's a great ballplayer and a true phenom are basing most of their assumption on the 04 playoffs. Trust me, he is far from being the player he was that postseason, and he has IMO one of the most unjustified contracts ever.
April 19, 200620 yr Adrian Beltre has always had UPSIDE, never did he amount to anything with the Dodgers until 2004 when he had an offensive explosion. He can be accused of steroid use BUT we can't accuse everyone that has had dropoffs ever since steroids has been tested. It can be another Richard Hidalgo case. Either way, I've always seen Beltre as an average player. Sadly as a hitter you have to make adjustments to consistently hit year after year, if he settled into his old form, maybe it wasn't enough.
April 19, 200620 yr Yes he did, but also take note that he wasn't facing major league quality pitchers, and when he did, they were not in season form. His defense has always been there, but it's hard to decide how well a player will do based on a tournament. He can shut me up and turn it around, but with the doubt he is probably already facing (with all the steroid scandals), it'll be hard for ANY player with all-star status to return to form with all the worries within themselves of getting blamed for using something they never touched, and am not saying Beltre didn't use it, am just saying it's not the case with every player.
