An announced crowd of only 6,017 was on hand to see the Florida Marlins blow a 5-1 lead and lose 8-5 to the Philadelphia Phillies at Dolphin Stadium. The crowd was the smallest of the season for the Fish, who continue to work on a plan on a new ballpark in Hialeah. We've heard MLB officials aren't exactly thrilled with the prospects of placing a team in the farthest corner of Miami-Dade County on the site of a former industrial dump; in response, they've started working on their own ballpark plan for downtown Miami, commissioning renderings and quietly taking with local officials. No one -- including city and county officials or MLB folks -- expects a ballpark in Hialeah to succeed, and the more this is drawn out the more precarious the finances of the Marlins appear to be.

Yes, I agree with you. It's alittle to late in the Hialeah negotiations for MLB to pull a fast one like this.

Well, I can understand MLB being reluctant to go along with Hialeah without reservation, but considering that they also have made it pretty clear that the South Florida market will not be abandoned, I see no other choice.

 

However, it is probably too far along with the city of Hialeah to just back out, and it's also probably too irreparably damaged with Miami.

Leave downtown Miami alone-the only place desirable is on the Bay and no one wants to give up any more land there, especially after the AAA was built. Will a downtown stadium bring any more fans from the office workers there? It didn't help the Heat when they were losing. Hialeah is fine, the bias against it is unfounded. More people will have access from N. Broward and Palm Beach than if it is downtown and that will make up for any downtown office workers. Shops, restaurants, entertainment will bring people out. Last time I looked, Sawgrass Mall was not on the water and the place is a destination. Hard Rock is packed night in and night out and not everyone is there for the gambling-I think it is because they can smoke in public there (cough cough). I love you Hialeah. Won't ever say what we used to say back in high school when we played Hialeah high and they yelled, Hialeah, Hialeah, Hialeah and we responded with a word that rhymed and started with "D"

Okay.....call me a troll or whatever.....but this is what I have been saying. And dont believe that it is just MLB that thinks Hialeah would be a terrible mistake. The Marlins likely feel much the same way. MLB is just out front on the deal because the Marlins cant really say this without ruffling the last remaining unruffled feathers in Dade County.

This is the last gasp effort by MLB and the Marlins to stay in S. Fla. If something doesnt happen in downtown Miami by the 15th....watch for the announcement of full blown negotiations with the Judge in SA either on or soon after the 15th. And I believe that the deadline of the 15th wasnt all the Judge's idea. The Marlins, MLB and the Judge were likely all marching in lock step on this deadline.

Building the Ballpark on Bicentenial Park would be the best fit for everyone. Just to the north of the AAA, amazing amount of construction is going on there, including dozens and dozens of condos and the Performing Arts Center. Biscayne Blvd. is turning into a premier spot in South Florida. It only makes sense.

But I do believe there would have to be some reason for legitimate optimism for them to not turn towards SA at that time. I think they really do want to stay in Miami.......they just need a reason to do it. So far, there is no reason for them to stay.

You know I am still not sure that Hialeah isnt a whole lot more than some niche radio station guy trying to create a name for himself and listenership. There is a dearth of quotes from the people that are really going to have say on whether this is going to happen or not regarding Hialeah.

And I really dont care whether there is good news or not out of S. Florida. If the Marlins stay in a new downtown ballpark that is good for baseball. And I am first and foremost a baseball fan. If they cant get a stadium deal done then I believe SA is a great opportunity for MLB. I would dearly love to see baseball, for once, beat the NFL to the punch. SA is a long, long ways off from being able to support three major league sports. If the NFL beats baseball to the punch on SA, it will be bad for baseball. All I'm saying.

When the mayor of Hialeah, several city commissioners, county mayor and county manager say things are good very well I think we should take what he is saying seriously. Hell, ALL the spanish language radio and TV stations are reporting this. If you have connected the dots yet you will see that Del Castillo is getting his info from a very very highly placed official :whistle .

And what source, pray tell, are you basing this bit of information on? Do you have the Judge's phone line tapped?

I see this as good if it is true. Look at this way, if Loria and Hialeh are ready for a park and MLB nixes the idea and wants them to put the park in downtown Miami, guess who would have to kick in more funding, MLB. And if MLB nixes Hialeh and tells Loria to look outside Miami, then they look like the bad guys for moving the Marlins. Seems like a win-win situation. The only loser could be Hialeh and Loria could be easily using them to get MLB to kick in some money to fund a downtown park

Chavez Ravine is just northwest of downtown LA and it is pretty centrally located to most of the folks in Los Angeles County (it's at the end of Sunset Blvd). Not to mention it is one of the most beautiful ballparks I have ever visited!

 

Second, who the hell is Kevin Reichard? For all we know, he is someone no different than people on this message board throwing stuff in the air and hoping it sticks. Before you give this site or writer any credibility, check his references, check his sources. You'll see he probably has no idea what he's talking about!

MLB would not rather leave S. Florida than play in Hialeah. Give it a break, dude. You're just dreaming.

Downtown Miami really leaves out a lot of fans from Broward though, and certainly Palm Beach.

 

The Hialeah location is easily accessible right down the Sawgrass Expressway or the Turnpike for the Broward & PB fans. It's not all that much longer a drive for North Broward & Palm Beach fans than Dolphins Stadium is actually.

So Longhorns Rule is just a troll who is disagreeing with everyone here, some who are well versed in the stadium issue, because he wants the team in San Antonio right? If that's the case, stop trying to ruffle everyone's feathers.
