I've been a member for a few days now and I've gotten more information about this stadium from this site than any news media I've been following for 3 years. By the way, the live feed from the senate isn't working for me so I'm just going to have to follow the thread for updates. This is a great site.

well depends on who in Hialeah you ask if there is sufficent land...Mr. Codina just got over 1,000 acres...some of which is earmarked for this project

 

Yet it hasn't been transferred. Public statements from Codina say he has no plans to sell the land to the city, let alone donate it free of cost! Cheerleaders for the deal have proposed that he will, but that seems more like their own wishes than anything else. I don't see Codina giving up something for nothing.

No kidding. I've seen news articles saying that part of the land is already designated to be turned over to Hialeah to give to the Marlins and Codina is all set to go. But I remember seeing an article that quoted Codina as saying he had no intention of selling or donating land for a ballpark...

If what I'm reading above is a tax rebate, perhaps we are using the wrong terminology subsidy. Sudsidy is not a Tax rebate.

 

Under the subsidy method: for example people from the Panhandle who pay taxes are not going to benefits from subsidy forwarded to Orlando/Tampa/Miami.

 

Again this is under the Subsidy method, however, if indeed it is a tax rebate then call it what it is. My entire comment was based on sudsidy not rebates.

 

 

Depending on how Florida sales tax is set up, its still a subsidy.

 

Since I know Texas law, I'll use it. under Texas law, the state collects 6.25% sales tax and cities are allowed to collect up to 2%. All of this money goes to the state initially, then the city's share is refunded back.

 

Let's say they state decided it would refund a certain amount of sales tax to the Spurs, or the Cowboys, from sales tax earned on site. At least 3/4 of that would be state money, being given to support a local team. That's unacceptable.

 

However I wouldn't mind if say, San Antonio decided to refund a portion of it's share of the sales tax earned at the AT&T Center to the Spurs, or some other situation.

 

Like I said though, depends on how FL tax is set up.

US Senate is federal level, this is a state issue.

 

To rferry, the reason Codina would agree to donate/sell the land is because without the Marlins he can't get the UDB rolled back to my knowledge. Haven't really had my ear to the ground on this one as much.

Using the word "subsidy" conjures up an inaccurate and biased image for those exposed to it, and in the past has been used by those aligned against the Marlins efforts to get a stadium built to distort and confuse the issue.

 

The word "subsidy", like the false argument "how can you give the Marlins money when we need more schools and roads?", is used to make a mockery of the truth and appeal to the misplaced sensibilities of the electorate.

So what happened?

If the Florida senate passed the bill more power for Florida's professional sports. However, I have always, and will continue to object using state tax dollars to fund a regional sport teams. Whether it's LA. for saints, or any other state, period. I'm all for each regions using thier own tax dollars to fund local stadium, etc. But it's unfair for the rest of the Florida population that have nothing to do, or can't attend regional game beacuse of distance, etc.

 

LA. is the exception, they don't know what in the whole is going in their own state. LA is seem to be in the news more often than not relating to corruption. This is no reflection on the citizens of LA, but their leaders.

Note: Tag NFL Commissioner has gone on record saying that the state should not be funding professional sports in form of a subsidy.

 

I will support local funding for local teams, but not state money. I'm not being negative towards the Marlins, and if the bill passes more power to SF.

 

But, I'm being objective here. If Jeb Bush signed this bill, he could be waving goodby to his future political career. Just keep in mind that funding will not benefits the entire state, only certain areas. That will not sit well with those individuals who will not benefits from this bill, but will have to folk out taxes anyway. :mad

As has been noted this isn't a subsidy, this is a tax rebate...basically whatever is sold at the stadium is charged a sales tax and the first 2 million of sales tax that is collected is kept in the facility to pay for it. Everything after 2 million is sent to the state as per state law

Could you give me an example (definition) of the individuals that you are talking about? Who are the individuals that will be folking out taxes if this bill passes? I'm just trying to get a better grasp of your opinion. thanks....

This would not affect all tax payers statewide or locally, it would affect those taxpayers that attend the games and buy tickets, merchandise and food at the new ballpark.

Codina WILL give up the land to the City of Hialeah, cause as Homer points out earlier, without the city of hialeah, Codina wouldn't have gotten the UDB moved. City of Hialeah did all the work for that line to be moved so in order for their work he is donating the land. He can't come out and blatanly say that due to the fact that it won't be official til an annoucement is made

it is HB 615 but the one we are worried about is SB 1426 which is now being heard if im not mistaken...HB 615 passed the House by a vote of 119-0 with one rep. not voting so if it passes the senate it looks good for us
