Posted May 8, 200618 yr Now that Olivo is no longer hot at the plate, and I won't have to hear "look how he has been hitting!" What about his ability to call a game? Anyone have any information about that?
May 8, 200618 yr We won't know until our pitchers can actually locate the ball where catchers call for it. Case in point (although about another signal caller's travails yesterday) - "Matt Treanor positioned his catcher's mitt a few inches above the dirt behind home plate, indicating to Scott Olsen where to deposit the 2-1 changeup to Albert Pujols on Sunday. That Treanor had to reach up for the incoming pitch wasn't a good omen...." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins Kind of says it all.
May 8, 200618 yr Olivo has a great arm and all and u like to see him behind the plate. but sometimes i think blocking the ball and catching the ball right wit the glove on a cross up or so is what he needs help on. Hes a couple passed balls and some wild pitches, that he should have caught and a couple times they have cost us. Case in point the 1st run on Saturdays game.
May 8, 200618 yr I dont really think Olivo is anything more than average in any area, arm stregnth above average but his overall game=a guy who should be no more than a backup. I hope he's not with the team next year.

May 8, 200618 yr Miguel Olivo is a superb back up. He is nothing special. He has his moments but overall he is probably a little below average. He would make a great back up possibly one of the best coming off the bench.

I said Kotsay and Barton, never anything about Wright because he plays at a position that is already filled.
May 9, 200618 yr he's struggling catching willis mainly, and he's admitted it. maybe willis just has a lot of movement on his pitches. either way he needs to be catching it, or at least knocking it down/ getting his body in front of it. olivo was brought here to handle the pitching staff. he's never been much of a hitter- so i dont' expect much for him. olivo is at best a decent backup, but for a team like us-he's the starter

I am confused.
May 9, 200618 yr Tough to call a good game when our pitchers can't throw strikes. He's gone a good job.
May 9, 200618 yr Author Until the end of the season, we will not have information regarding pitcher ERA with him catching vs other catchers.
May 9, 200618 yr Tough to call a good game when our pitchers can't throw strikes. He's gone a good job. I believe the catcher if he is a good one should have some type of control over the pitcher. He should be a leader to the pitchers especially since Olivo is a veteran. He should be taking control of the game not the pitcher.

(See my post above regarding Treanor's futile attempt to get Olsen to keep his next pitch DOWN)
