North Korea launches missile

The whole point of the troops in South Korea are to deter North Korea from attacking them again.

We are not 'forcing peace', whatever that means, we are helping and aiding the Koreans in defending themselves from the Koreans. I have a future in-law who was born and raised in Busan. She would tell you first hand how grateful they had been that their were troops in Korea.

I don't think you know what you are talking about if you are using an analogy of someone holding a knife to people's necks at a party to 'stir things up'. What is the U.S stirring up exactly? I didn't know protecting allies was now forcing peace on someone. South Korea helped aid us in Vietnam and in Iraqi Freedom, we in turn will continue to help them.

Anyways, there are only about 25,000 troops now in Korea as the U.S has removed some since the 90s for various reasons and recently because of the Iraq Conflict.

To think we are holding the Koreans hostage or creating a militaristic state because of our presence in Korea is being unaware and ignorant.

my step dad was stationed in korea and lost some good friends of his in Vietnam...so with his military background and my history background, we both agree that there is no point in having troops in germany(where he also served) and in Korea...look...if N. Korea wants to take over south Korea, they can do it with the snap of their fingers...but the whole ally (buddy) system is what causes wars to get bigger(WW 1)...which is fine if you are down with the death and carnage...but i prefer to let sleeping giants lay sleeping...it is not in our best interest to have troops there...do you even know why we attacked korea in the first place...communism...and 50 years later, its still there...what have we done about it...nothing, what are the troops doing there besides wasting taxpayers dollars, nothing...maybe its just me, but having those troops there isnt worth war with korea...if north korea wants to take over south korea...what are we really losing...oh right...nothing...and ps superman, you can call me ignorant or dumb all the ways that you want, but because you dont see things the way i do, it doesnt make me ignorant or unaware or dumb...it makes me different, something that most americans fail to realize about the rest of the world, they are different, they think differently and they dont need our help to make up their own minds :whistle

LOL @ people thinking we don't need troops around the globe.

does germany have troops all the world, what about korea, or japan, or vietnam, or X country...NO...you know why...THEY DONT f***ING NEED TO...neither do we...and if you are so anxious to fight the world Superman, go for it...sign right up...all our troops overseas do is stir up trouble, they arent peace keepers, they arent cops, they are soldiers...trained to kill and do it as efficiently as possible...how do you think americans would feel if there were iraqi troops guarding the lincoln memorial, or korean troops protecting the statue of liberty...im pretty sure we wouldnt like it very much...point is, if you f*** with the bees nest...expect to be stung...and we just keep thinking that we are poo bear and can reach into the bees nest whenever we please...thats not right and i think 9/11 was one tiny sting compared to what is coming...and what is coming could be prevented if we werent big bad U.S.A who has arms and legs, but would rather use them to fire guns and manuvuer tanks then to use handshakes to settle disputes diplomatically

Could you be anymore ignorant?

1. does germany have troops all the world, what about korea, or japan, or vietnam, or X country...NO...you know why...THEY DONT f***ING NEED TO...neither do we

Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, United Kingdom, and Ukraine.

Those are countries that sent troops to aid us in Iraq.

Also, why do we need troops around the world?

I. Many, many millitaries around the world request us to help train their millitary.

II. We spread the millitary out during the Cold War.

III. We are in Kosovo to maintain peace there along with many many other countries.

IV. In Africa we have troops working with their government to deter terrorist activiteis. Part of OEF.

V. In Egypt we have troops along with 11 other countries to keep peace following the Protocal to the treaty of Peace.

VI. In Japan we have a large contingent of troops to aid them from North Korea.

VII. In the Phllipinnes we have troops there to aid and help their own millitary in fighting terrorism in the area.

VIII. We have troops in Turkey to aid in the inital threat from Iraq.

IX. We have troops in most European countries and other places for OEF at their request.

2. all our troops overseas do is stir up trouble, they arent peace keepers, they arent cops, they are soldiers...trained to kill and do it as efficiently as possible

Are you delusional? Such a sad, sad point of view and a slap in the face to members of the armed forces if you think all they do is 'kill'. What the hell are you basing this on? The U.S millitary does more things for the world besides kill, many times over. Don't be disrespectful to our soliders by categorizing them as mindless killers or whatever you were getting at.

3. how do you think americans would feel if there were iraqi troops guarding the lincoln memorial, or korean troops protecting the statue of liberty...im pretty sure we wouldnt like it very much...

As the world's super power we do not need the help of other nations in that regard.

4. and what is coming could be prevented if we werent big bad U.S.A who has arms and legs, but would rather use them to fire guns and manuvuer tanks then to use handshakes to settle disputes diplomatically

Good thing you weren't leading the country in the Revolutionary War. So you would have wanted the U.S to sit idely and not help the British and Soviets in World War 2? We should have negotiated?

LOL @ people thinking we don't need troops around the globe.

You, obvliously, are misinformed my friend.

Now do me a favor, remove your head from your ass before it's too late and you go from misinformed to semi-retarted.

Does Germany have troops everywhere? Um, well lets us relfect on the LAST two times that happend.

China has troops all over Asia. There are british troops in the US. And in case you didn't know, the US pays a lot for out forces to be there. Take it from me friend, someone who's in the military, shut the hell up. You have no idea what your talking about.

EDIT, and it your little thing about military forces trained to kill? Bud, I'm in the Air Force, and only 15% of us are "trained to kill efficiently." Most airmen could hit a wall with a potato gun if they were standing 5 feet in front of it. It's sad, but the AF mission is to put bombs on target and maintain air superiority, or some jazz.

A Vietnam war vet is going to have a severely different and dilluted opinion of war in general and how are you going to tell me that opinion is more valid then an actual citizen of the country, a citizen who was protected by the millitary.

I'm saying you are ignorant for saying we have created a millatristic state in Korea. It's not a matter of opinion, that is why I said it's ignorant to stay there. We have in no way created a millatristic state over there in any way, shape, or form. It's not a debate. That is how it is.

P.S The Korean War has never officially ended.

Education works for the military and it can work for you too.

And remember if someone is in the military they are smarter than you and know more than you so don't pick fights with them you'll always lose and crumble under their intelligence. So as he said STFUNEWBLEZ.

1. does germany have troops all the world, what about korea, or japan, or vietnam, or X country...NO...you know why...THEY DONT f***ING NEED TO...neither do we

Of course we do. We are spreading freedom. Are you against freedom? Why do you hate freedom? And as we continue to fight a war against an idea we need as many people out there as possible because it is a hard thing to kill ideas with bullets and bombs especially ideas that are as old as time itself.

It is also our way of making sure we stay big dog on the block. After all no one stays a superpower forever, one reason we are the head honcho now. And by spreading all that loveable democracy and freedom things are bound to work. (Just don't look at Palestine.)

And remember all those countries that have troops in Iraq because as we all know Iraq is considered all over the world, who cares if these countries are now pulling out or sent a handful of people each, it's a presence damn it!

2. all our troops overseas do is stir up trouble, they arent peace keepers, they arent cops, they are soldiers...trained to kill and do it as efficiently as possible

Now now they all don't stir up trouble. Only a handful have been charged with crimes. The rest nation build. What they have trouble doing is protecting our borders, one reason they were never given that job. Their job is spreading freedom, not blocking those out of it.

3. how do you think americans would feel if there were iraqi troops guarding the lincoln memorial, or korean troops protecting the statue of liberty...im pretty sure we wouldnt like it very much...

Well the president didn't seem to mind those from abroad running this nation's ports. I am not sure the public backed that move up but that is a different story.

P.S. So we are all on the same page the Iraq Conflict never officially started.

A Vietnam war vet is going to have a severely different and dilluted opinion of war in general and how are you going to tell me that opinion is more valid then an actual citizen of the country, a citizen who was protected by the millitary

opinions have no validity over one another, does a Korean opinion on their situation have more or less credibility than an Air Force Pilot who served there in the 60's...no...

I'm saying you are ignorant for saying we have created a millatristic state in Korea. It's not a matter of opinion, that is why I said it's ignorant to stay there. We have in no way created a millatristic state over there in any way, shape, or form. It's not a debate. That is how it is.

please tell me where i said having troops there will make it a militaristic state...no...i just pointed out that we are not as welcomed there as you may think...and yes the korean war hasnt ended...but under that, you could say, the korean war never started, same with Vietnam and the two gulf wars, or any of the wars that the US is starring at right now...

and Iceman...dont think i dont support the troops...i have had 2 cousins in Iraq and my roommate is in Kuwait, the troops are my friends, my family, my fellow americans...but i dont support them being police in other countries...sorry...because that is how they are being used now...and for the most part, the Army, Navy and Air Force are trained to kill, not mindlessly, but does mindless killing happen, yes...they are trained to kill, whether you are repair man, a doctor, a chef or whatever, you are preparing soldiers to fight and win...and i...have no problem with that...i just dont like how we are using the finest troops in the world to be policeman, they might as well be slave catchers of the old south, and whenever____ civilian from iraq, korea or wherever gets out of line...well...1 in the chest and 2 in the head and you know for sure that they are dead...and my ignorant thinking tells me that is wrong...it tells me that we value our values above all without respect to other cultures

Mr. Colbert. There is a general rule against celebrity accounts in the bullpen. A while back, there were like 5 different celebrity accounts posting in here and it got distracting. It detracted from the quality discussions we occasionally have. I'm just giving you a heads up before you get a knock on the door from Admin and his hired goons(not implying that the moderators are hired goons..they arent actually paid :p ).

its not our job to spread freedom...i have nothing against freedom, but trust me when i say...spreading freedom when you have all the neat toys(weapons) is not the way to do it...thats what propaganda is for...the best thing that came out of Iraq II was the news station they created that tries to not shed the US in such a bad light...remember...the pen is mightier than the sword...if we had representatives go to the middle east spreading messages of change and freedom, that fine...but spreading freedom with an m-16 isnt spreading freedom at all...its forcing freedom...and one thing ive noticed over the years...people dont generally like to be forced to do anything(damn free will)

You won the battle.

But I won the war.

And to think, I usually proof read my posts.

In any case, whoever has the celeb account of Stephen Colbert, the sarcasm is enough.

I made a good point, and I don't clain just because you are IN the military it makes you smarter. I still don't see hoe some of my *co-workers* made it out of highschool, let along pass the asvab. But my co workers are in Security Forces, some of which, are half-whits. But I don't like putting them down, because at least they are here, serving the country doing a job which no one else wants to do. That is admirable, is it not?

All, I'm trying to say, if we go to War with North Korea, I will most likely be there. Guam is very close to Korea, and I am a member of the Security Forces, who in case you don't know have taken over convoy duties in Iraq and Afghanastan for the most part, will be there defending what used to be South Korea.

Guys, North Korea knows if they loose the war, there won't be a North Korea, it'll be just Korea. Which is what they want, but it will not be what they invisioned. It'll be a real war, not this Iraq pussyfooting around.

As bad as the media makes the Iraq war to be, in terms of casulaties, it has the least number in any war that's lasted that long. Just over 2k. Which yeah, that sucks, but to compare that number of 2,000 to the estimated dead in the 1st week of war with Kim, nearly triple that(assuming they invade the south).

I qualified for every job in the army acording to the asvab and I'm a dumbass.

Picking infantry further illustrates that point.

I was one of the rare breed that shot better with nightvision than an m68 or whatever that piece of sh*t they put on top of m249 and m240's is(m145 site maybe? I honestly cant remember). The ACOG was a thing of beauty though.

Anyway, enough about me...I met some of those trained to kill USAF Combat Controllers. If I was allowed to enlist in the regular airforce, thats what I'd do. Although, their technology wasn't much better than the regular US army infantry. Never met a para rescue diver though.

Troops are needed in Korea. Would garrisoned troops in country get slaughtered? Most definantly. But overall, the US could likely overtake the central government of North Korea as fast as it did in Iraq. North Korea likely wants to provoke us as much as we want to provoke them. It doesnt make sense for either side...and when Kim Jong Ill is gone, things in Korea could realisticially change. Look at how far communist china has come in most regards.

Mr JimmyJack, the truth is plain and simple.

If we didn't have a force in Taiwan, it'd be under Chinese tyranny.

If we didn't have a force in South Korea, they'd be under Kim Jon Il's rule.

If we didn't have a force in Japan, they would be susceptible to attack from both China and North Korea.

And that's just in the Four Dragons.

first of all...we are friends kinda/sorta with china...so taiwan, as far as im concerned, is theirs to deal with anyways...especially since G.B. handed over taiwan...secondly...does the everyday american care about what happens in korea...no...if they use one of their nukes, end of the world, simple as that...thats not an option...however, is N. Korea attacks south Korea, all our troops there are wiped out...and that shouldnt happen...thirdly...Japan faces very little current threat from either china(economic ally) or North Korea(all talk)...i dont know...we dont like people telling us how to live, and they dont like us doing that to them...i understand that sometimes its nice to have a world response that is quick, but damn...we could stand to cut back a bit...and stay out of wars...but thats for a different thread all together...give peace a chance people... :whistle

Without a global organization that will actually do its job, "giving peace a chance" is out of the question today.

South Korea is one of our trade partners, having troops there signifies that if North Korea invades they are also declarign war on the U.S. so its a deterrant. And its irrelevant what the everyday american thinks he care about in terms of korea. South Korea, Japan are good for our economy and we're good for theirs. By the way didnt great britain hand over 'hong kong' to China? As far as I'm concerned Taiwan is still a free country and a hostile take over by China isn't good economically for the U.S. or europe b/c it eliminates competition in the region

Without a global organization that will actually do its job, "giving peace a chance" is out of the question today.

Unfortunately yes. Ever since Desert Storm, the UN has been getting less and less relevant.

and its our fault...we made the UN irrelevant...we could have helped to build it into the world police that W. so wants to have and we could have kept most of our boys home and not spent billions a week in a worthless war(and it is worthless...i mean really...what are we trying to accomplish...and im not bashing troops, im bashing their Commander in Chief)
