3rd missile launched....this one thought to be the long-range one. Seems to have broken up in the air. First 2 landed in the Sea of Japan.

Confirmed by The State Department.

WASHINGTON - North Korea on Tuesday launched a long-range missile that may be capable of reaching the United States, but it failed after 35 or 40 seconds, two State Department officials said. The missile was one of at least three that were fired. The other two short-range missiles landed in Sea of Japan. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the long-range missile was the Taepodong-2, North Korea's most advanced missile with a range of up to 9,320 miles.

Man, the Japanese have to be scared right now.

Time for our spy-master of satellites to double their efforts in watching these guys.

6 missiles fired per CNN reports.

Do they know how many were long-range? Or was it just the one?

2 long-range missiles.....both aborted

If we weren't in Afghanistan they should have fired on it, we'd probably have given them a medal.

I've really underestimated the power both countries have. Just gives you a little reality of what the world might turn into.

Both of which countries?

US and North Korea?

whats scarier is that we still have troops in south korea...why...can anyone else explain this to me, as why we need troops in a land we stopped fighting over 50 years ago...why...why do we need troops all over the globe...havent we learned that people dont like to be told how to live???or do we need a missile on our front lawn to be reminded again

If a war ever starts between North and South Korea, those 50,000 U.S. soldiers will be the first casualties.

Right now I can bet that the South Korean military is much stronger than the North. However, the North has nuclear (and maybe biological or chemical weapons) which the South does not.

Is there a reason to keep those soldiers there? I'm not sure. Maybe someone on here knows.

Well, the North wants to capture the South. If they tried to do so and our troops where killed that would be an act of war against us, so we'd come in and kick thier ass, potentially. It's just a move to keep them from moving.

That being said, so many countries are ticked about these missile tests we have a lot of allies against North Korea now. Japan was never friends with them to begin with (not that they have much of an army) and Russia is a good ally to have against them. These tests were a blessing in disguise. Showed how innefective North Korea's supposed "awesome" military capabilities are and they landed in just the right spots to piss other countries off.

good point about russia as an and japan as potential allies...i guess what im trying to say is why does the US believe that by stationing troops around the world, especially in and around countries we have already fought, that they are somehow bringing peace to the world...a forced peace is not peace i dont care what anyone else says on that one...its like bringing a knife to a party and walking around holding it to everyone's neck and seeing who you can stir up...i dont know, maybe im too much of an optimist in believing that solving problems with guns, bombs and missiles is not the way to go since it will only lead to bigger problems

Why do we need troops in South Korea?

Maybe, just maybe, because its south of NORTH FREAKING KOREA.

In a case that the North ever tried to invade the south, the south could not defend itself from the north alone. Whoever said the ROKs military is stronger than NK has never been to Korea.

North Korea has been planning this war for 50yrs! I have many friends stationed here on Andersen AFB Guam who've come from Osan and Kunsan AB, ROK. They have been told that if North Korea were to invade the south, the casualty rate would be ongodly within the first week.

In South Korea, at least on the Air Bases, they have exercises every month. They conists of wearing MOPP gear, which is a chem suit, for 14 hours. ALARM BLUE. ALARM BLUE. Yelled over the loudspeakers around the base. GROUND ATTACK. ALARAM BLUE. It's crazy. The sirens blare and it's pretty nuts from what I understand.

And just what the f*** do you think they're doing that for?

LOL @ people thinking we don't need troops around the globe.

does germany have troops all the world, what about korea, or japan, or vietnam, or X country...NO...you know why...THEY DONT f***ING NEED TO...neither do we...and if you are so anxious to fight the world Superman, go for it...sign right up...all our troops overseas do is stir up trouble, they arent peace keepers, they arent cops, they are soldiers...trained to kill and do it as efficiently as possible...how do you think americans would feel if there were iraqi troops guarding the lincoln memorial, or korean troops protecting the statue of liberty...im pretty sure we wouldnt like it very much...point is, if you f*** with the bees nest...expect to be stung...and we just keep thinking that we are poo bear and can reach into the bees nest whenever we please...thats not right and i think 9/11 was one tiny sting compared to what is coming...and what is coming could be prevented if we werent big bad U.S.A who has arms and legs, but would rather use them to fire guns and manuvuer tanks then to use handshakes to settle disputes diplomatically

The whole point of the troops in South Korea are to deter North Korea from attacking them again.

We are not 'forcing peace', whatever that means, we are helping and aiding the Koreans in defending themselves from the Koreans. I have a future in-law who was born and raised in Busan. She would tell you first hand how grateful they had been that their were troops in Korea.

I don't think you know what you are talking about if you are using an analogy of someone holding a knife to people's necks at a party to 'stir things up'. What is the U.S stirring up exactly? I didn't know protecting allies was now forcing peace on someone. South Korea helped aid us in Vietnam and in Iraqi Freedom, we in turn will continue to help them.

Anyways, there are only about 25,000 troops now in Korea as the U.S has removed some since the 90s for various reasons and recently because of the Iraq Conflict.

To think we are holding the Koreans hostage or creating a militaristic state because of our presence in Korea is being unaware and ignorant.
