July 15, 200620 yr But still 8 or 9 teams to leapfrog. Listen, the only reason we can still discuss this is that the NL is just so bad this year, but even then, what you're asking is near impossible. To place us in a reasonable situation to be buyers, we'd have to pretty much win out until the deadline, because that's the only reasonable way I can see us climbing into second or third in the WC race, and get a winning record. Other than that, trying to plug this season is simply irresponsible.
July 15, 200620 yr I agree 100% w/ Swift. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This season has been awesome but it's next season and 2008 that are much more important. Unless we comitt robbery, trading away any of our young guys for a veteran is three steps backwards.
July 15, 200620 yr We play only bad teams through 7/31. If we go on a little good streak, say 7 of 9, that would probably put us about 4 games out and right in the middle of the WC race. Of course with Reggie playing every game and doing nothing other than getting in the way of victories on almost every game he plays it will be tough to go on a winning streak even against bad teams.

The only reason we're still in this is due to the incredible weakness of the league. To even get into reasonable position, we'd have to leapfrog Philly, Atlanta, Houston and Milwaukee, and even then we'd have the entire NL West and Cincy in front of us. My point is, to get back within shouting distance of the wild-card, we might as well aim at the division, because the kind of winning streak we're talking about needing would put us right back in the division, too, especially considering all the head-to-heads that will help make up ground faster than hoping for help from elsewhere.

July 15, 200620 yr We should concentrate what is infront of us. Fish need to concentrate on winning the upcoming games first. Fish goal: get over .500 and get 2nd place in the division. That should be a huge acomplishment to be talk about in ESPN.

While that may be true, the degree of rapid improvement we're talking about to get back into "buyer" status would put us comfortably within striking distance of the division at the deadline, even if that is not the way it finishes at the end of the season.

We have made a trade every year, and everyone of them has worked out well for us if you've followed the team except for possibly the Ron Villone trade but the jury is still out on whether Bazardo or Flannery will ever make a major league roster.

I dunno, I think we'd all like a do-over on the Penny/LoDuca/Mota fiasco. At the time, I was the biggest supporter of it, but looking at the contributions from 2005, I'd have rather taken my chances with Penny and turning the rotation into a "big-four" and probably fending off the Astros.
