Lowell will not start Game 1 vs. SF

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

MIAMI -- In the third inning of Sunday's game, it was vintage Mike Lowell.

Facing Jeremy Griffiths of the Mets, the Marlins two-time All-Star deposited a double down the left-field line.

It was Lowell's first hit since a bone in his left hand was fractured by a Hector Almonte pitch in a game against the Expos on Aug. 30.

The Marlins activated Lowell from the disabled list for their regular-season finale on Sunday, and the third baseman went 1-for-4 in Florida's 4-0 victory at Pro Player Stadium.

But just because Lowell -- who led the team with 32 homers and 105 RBIs -- is in a position to play doesn't mean that he is going to step back into the lineup when the Marlins open their Division Series on Tuesday at San Francisco.

On Sunday, manager Jack McKeon said that Lowell will not start. The Marlins will continue to play rookie Miguel Cabrera at third base and veteran Jeff Conine in left field when the playoffs begin.

"It's not fair to the club not to put the team that is best prepared on the field," said McKeon. "It's not fair to Mike."

Cabrera, a 20-year-old who was called up from Double-A, ended up batting .268 in 87 games, with 12 home runs and 62 RBIs. Conine, acquired from Baltimore immediately after Lowell was injured, hit five home runs and had 15 RBIs in September.

For much of the season, Lowell was the most dangerous hitter in the Marlins' lineup.

Showing resiliency, the Marlins were able to finish 18-8 without him in the lineup down the stretch.

"I'm not at 100 percent, but I'm good enough to be able to contribute, I think," said Lowell, who finished the year batting .276, with a .530 slugging percentage. "My hand felt like it was getting a little fatigued after the sixth or seventh inning. They told me that's normal. I just don't think it's as strong as my right hand."

For the best-of-five series with the Giants, McKeon wants to go with the lineup that got him to the postseason. If Lowell were completely healthy, and had he had a few extra games in which to tune up, it would be a different story.

For now Lowell is expected to be available from the bench.

"He's a weapon," said McKeon.

McKeon also noted that if it were so easy to miss a month and step right in at a high level, there would be no need for Spring Training.

"If we're winning, you can't really argue with that," said Lowell, who was medically cleared to begin hitting on Friday. "I don't want it to become a problem or distraction. I think it's a good problem. If all three of us feel good, that is a good thing for the team."

i see we're starting early

Wasting very little time, indeed.

This is going to be a lot of fun.

I'm going to be sprinting about a mile at 3:30 PM from my class to my car. Then, I'm going to drive like a complete a**hole to my apartment. I will arrive at about 4:04 PM. I'm gonna reach my couch at 4:05 PM, so I have just enough time to pop the cap off my Heineken, as Pierre digs in for the first pitch. I will not leave the couch except between innings for re-ups on the beer and the occasional bathroom break.

Amen.

Must you rub it in?

At some point on one of the NFL shows on ESPN, it was mentioned that Berman/Gwynn would be the announcing crew again. Along with someone else. It would be cool if it was Dave O'Brien, but I'll take Berman second. We went 2-0 during the two Phillies series with Berman announcing, so I take this as a positive sign. Also, this pretty much puts to rest any doubt whether Conine should be starting. He's like Superman when Berman does the announcing.

Actually, he hit a home run in all 3 ESPN games, didn't he? Oh, man...this should be good.

Hey guys, according to the Herald's website and the Giants' website (guys at MLB.com must have switched WSVN in Miami with KTVU in San Fran since on the Marlins page it says KTVU), it looks like WSVN-7 is going to pick up the ESPN feed. So rejoice that you can watch it using rabbit ears in Miami.

*Teacher, can we watch the Marlins on channel 7 for the last few minutes of class? :D
