August 21, 200619 yr His team might not win 90-100 like the mets will but he has himself counted for more victories for his team then Beltran has for his (using those two as examples). Has Soriano won more games for the Nats than Beltran has for the Mets? What's the statistic to go by there? Obviously, defense would have to play SOME type of role. Beltran has had 294 PO in 937.2 innings [.314 po/inning] 10 assists and 2 errors with an FPCT of .993 Soriano has had 253 PO in 1061.2 innings [.238 po/inning] 19 assists and 9 errors with an FPCT of .968 Beltran is hitting .320 [.426 OBP] with RISP, .429 with bases loaded, .308 with 2 outs and .333 in extra innings. Soriano is hitting .239 with RISP, .286 with bases loaded, .220 with 2 outs and .000 in extra innings! Otherwise, they are comparable in runs, hr, rbi, ba, avg, and slg Actually, Beltran has a slight lead in most of these categories, but Soriano steals more bases [and gets caught a lot]. This is where I think Passion is right, when the numbers are close, you've got to give the edge to the guy on the team that made the playoffs because his contributions were more meaningful in the grand scheme of baseball. Of course, then you can argue that Beltran is protected by Carlos Delgado while Soriano is protected by - Feliz Lopez? Then, the counter argument points to last night's game. In a close game [2-0 win], Beltran hit a HR. Soriano, on the other hand, went 0-4 with 3 K's leaving a pair on base against a division rival on a night when each team collected over 12 hits a piece...
August 21, 200619 yr Ok so lets say a player has identical stats on is on a contender and on isnt why shouldlnt the one on the noncontender not recieve the same about of votes since being MVP is about player and if the players contribite the same stats why should they factor the teams record ? :mischief2
August 21, 200619 yr If the Twins win the Wild Card Joe Mauer should be the MVP. .360 from a catcher is unheard of and well his numbers with runners on speak for themselves.
August 21, 200619 yr But Jeter is a team leader and plays great D :lol :lol :lol On his very very best days, Jeter is the definition of average defensively. For most of his career, he has been quite mediocre.

August 21, 200619 yr About what? Jeter, for the majority of his career, has been mediocre defensively. And never been more than average.
August 21, 200619 yr About what? Jeter, for the majority of his career, has been mediocre defensively. And never been more than average. First of all, mediocre and average mean the same thing (http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/mediocre). Second of all, if you think Derek Jeter is a bad defensive shortstop you haven't got a clue. Don't even bring in defensive statistics like "range factor" and the other Bill James fantasy world defensive statistics - they are worthless in reality. Do yourself a favor, and watch Jeter play for a week, if you still maintain that Jeter is bad (which I am assuming is what you meant by mediocre) defensively, then you just need to get over your anti-Yankees bias. That being said, he is, by no means, an elite defensive shortstop, but he is slightly above MLB average, and well above the league average in the American League.
August 21, 200619 yr On his very very best days, Jeter is the definition of average defensively. You are a veritable cornucopia of baseball knowledge. See: 2004 AL SS Gold Glove Winner See: 2005 AL SS Gold Glove Winner The Gold Glove does not, in fact, award defensive mediocrity. That is all?

That is all? so says palmerio and his what 10-20 games that one year he ran? GG is a popularity contest and means about as much as a davenport in a bucket. Is Jeter above average? Yes, but he isnt the best defensive SS on his own team right now.
August 21, 200619 yr Author Is Jeter above average? Yes, but he isnt the best defensive SS on his own team right now. They call him E-rod for a reason.
