August 19, 200620 yr If I had to choose between the two, I'd have to choose Jeter. I think Big Papi is the best hitter in the game, but I'd take a guy with 4 tools over a guy with only 2. If David could play D, I might say Ortiz. It also depends which of the two makes it to October.
August 20, 200620 yr Ortiz of course how many walk off hits doesnt he have and just look at his numbers first in HR and RBI already 43HR 116 RBIs
August 20, 200620 yr Tough decision. Ortiz changes the whole way you approach the Red Sox lineup. But Jeter is a team leader and plays great D along with some good numbers at the plate. I don't think you can deny how important Ortiz is to the Sox lineup, so I'll go with him for MVP. That being said, both very deserving...just happens that what Jeter does goes unnoticed sometimes.
August 20, 200620 yr You wont be able to go wrong with either player. But, the one that wins the division will win the MVP this year.
August 20, 200620 yr here's there stats Jeter: .335 10 HR 75 RBI Ortiz: .284 43 HR 116 RBI as of right now I have to go with Jeter. his average is 51 point higher. Obviously Big Papi is way up there in the HR/RBI departments. Jeter is a gold-glove candidate too, and ortiz is just a DH. If Papi can get his average 20-25 point higher, keep the HR's and RBI's coming, and all of the walk-off magic, I think he will win it.
August 20, 200620 yr Author I'm for DJ he can just do so many things for the Yankees. He has gone fairly unnoticed this year, and it's been by far one of his best seasons. Good glove, good pop, and a leader on the field, at the plate, and in the clubhouse.

Ok so you saying you would rather have 50 points more in your average and have 36 less RBI's and 33 less HR and all thoose walk off hits?
August 20, 200620 yr Author That's a good point Hermida #1 fan Jeter does so much more for the Yankees though. Clutch hits, stolen bases, diving plays to save games. I think that Ortiz is one of the best players in the game with the bat, but all around it has to be Jeter.

August 20, 200620 yr Leaders in these categories: Average: Jeter, .335 Hits: Jeter, 157 Doubles: Jeter, 28 Triples: Jeter, 3 Walks: Ortiz, 86 Home Runs: Ortiz, 43 Total Bases: Ortiz, 283 RBIs: Ortiz, 116 OBP: Jeter, .411 SLG%: Ortiz, .622 OPS: Ortiz, 1.020 It's pretty close but one big thing is the Yankees would still win the division without Jeter while the Red Sox are in 3rd place and out of the Wild Card chase without Ortiz. Still too much time to say now.
August 20, 200620 yr I love DJ, but I chose "Other". If a DH gets it, it should be Travis Hafner (despite the Indians being nowhere near the playoffs -- Thome has also dropped off), but if you need it to be a position player, Jermaine Dye is having an amazing season for the ChiSox, and Morneau and Mauer are absolutely carrying the Twins Offense (and Mauer is leading the league in hitting at CATCHER). Of the two, I'd go Jeter any time (biased of course), but I had to vote "other".

I don't think that's true. When the Yankees were considered a sinking ship the only thing that kept them afloat was Jeter. Of course, Jeter didn't have as many walk off hits as Ortiz had (no one has ever), but Jeter just about single handedly kept the Yankees alive for approximately a 2 month span. The difference in the division so far has been how the Red Sox and Yankees have handled adversity, where the Red Sox have wilted with their recent injuries, the Yankees, when faced with the same injury bug, somehow, surged. Bubba Crosby, Bernie Williams, Melky Cabrera, Miguel Cairo, and Andy Phillips were all starting in the Yankees lineup, but yet they still kept pace with the Sox. Now, we'll see if the Red Sox can mount a surge like the Yankees did and make this whole race a lot more interesting. Personally, I'd give the MVP to Ortiz, unless the Red Sox miss the playoffs, in which case, CI wins.

August 20, 200620 yr I was actually surprised to see so much love for Jeter when the fashionable thing is to root for Papi. I just read an interesting article about how the MVP for the Redsox and most clutch hitter in baseball is... Manny Ramirez? Check it out - it's a good read. OBVIOUSLY - I have love for DJ. He has picked up the slack for Arod all season. As far as the RBI situation goes, Jeter bats in the 2 hole versus Papi in the 3 hole. Okay, baseball fans, what is the job of the #1 and #2 hitter versus the job for the #3 and #4 hitter? Who has more RBI opportunities? I may as well argue that Jeter is better than Papi because he has 26X as many stolen bases or because he has 157 hits to Papi's 129 or because his OBP is .411 vs Papi's .398... Speaking of RBI opportunities, here's another great article discussing the value of the RBI statistic.
August 21, 200620 yr Wow - speaking of clutch, here's a surprising set of facts: Stats on hitting with RISP Ortiz Jeter AB 136 116 OBP .398 .483 AVG .284 .379 RBI 69 62 With all of the dramatic HR's Ortiz has hit, I'm really surprised by this information! Even more surprising, with 2 outs and bases loaded, Ortiz is hitting .333 with a .400 OBP. Very impressive. However, in the same situation, Jeter is hitting .667 with an unreal .800 OBP!
August 21, 200620 yr Author Well there's your answer for RBI numbers they're fairly even. .379 with RISP is unreal.
August 21, 200620 yr Basically, these numbers work out like this; Jeter has converted runs at a rate of .534 per opportunity versus Ortiz's .507 Those numbers actually translate into Jeter having MORE RBI than Ortiz given an equal number of AB with RISP. That is a truly surprising stat.
August 21, 200620 yr Author Plus Jeter gets on nearly half the time with RISP. They don't call him captain clutch for nothing
August 21, 200620 yr I wanted to throw Manny's numbers up with RISP too: AB: 119 OB: .457 AV: .319 BI: 66 BI/AB: .555 And, since Yanks&Marlins mentioned him, Hafner's numbers: AB: 122 OB: .469 AV: .320 BI: 78 BI/AB: .639 Finally, here's Mauer's line - wow! AB: 100 OB: .518 AV: .390 BI: 58 BI/AB: .580
