Why trade for A-Rod when we could trade for...

Featured Replies

Vernon Wells, CF

27 years old

stat line for this season: .303 BA, 32 HR, 106 RBI, 17 SB, .988 Fielding Percentage with 4 errors all season

has two gold gloves on his resume, 2004, 2005

Oh, and did I mention that he's only owed 5.6 million next season?

or

...that the Blue Jays are looking for starting pitching?

The only catch would be that next season is the final year of his current contract. So, if we didn't sign him to an extension, it would be a waste of whatever talent we traded away to get him. If we would in fact trade for him AND sign him to an extension, he would be in line for a hefty raise in salary. The Blue Jays are in the process of trying to sign him to an extension, but if they don't get it done, they may be even more willing to part ways with him, to get some type of value out of him before he walks at the end of next season. Seemed to me a little bit more of a logical trade than A-Rod. Any thoughts?

What do you mean? I'm not sure I'm following you.

he wants to test the free agent market and is looking for Carlos Beltran-like money

So, am I correct in assuming that you guys think he's gonna walk after next season no matter if he's still with the Jays or with us?

Maybe it's just that he's tired of playing for a team that hasn't been a playoff contender.

Wasn't that part of the reason Delgado left Toronto?

Yep! Wouldn't you want to test the free agent market if you had a resume like Vernon Wells?

And wouldn't you stay MILES and MILES away from a trade like this ? Giving up young starters for one year of a "possible" good year from a position player ?

No Doubt! If you are a GM who likes his job you wouldn't touch this one at all

I'm just saying, if they Jays end up shopping him, they might not want as much for him just to make sure that they get something in return. Maybe we could get him for less than a top pitcher.

I'm not looking at this being rolling the dice on a "possible" good year...he's got a legit track record on defense. And anything he does offensively would be a plus compared to what we had to work with in CF this year.

Who knows, maybe if we bring him in for a year, and go to the playoffs, maybe he'll want to stick around.

I hear you! It just appears unlikely the Marlins would trade for a 1 year "rental" It just wouldn't fit with what the Marlins have been doing up to now...Is it possible? YES...Likely? No. They just don't seem to do business that way. I hope we don't sound condescending to you in any way sgleason02. Sometimes we may be a little abrupt in our comments

No, I'm not taking offense to your comments at all, I just think that everyone that's posted so far has been pretty close-minded. It seems like Vernon Wells has already come out and said, "I'm going to test the free-agent market." It's just kind of strange to me that everyone is so close-minded at trying to find a quality player to fill a void in our team, and at the same time are so open-minded to bringing in A-Rod, who doesn't directly fill any needs that we currently have. I appreciate the comments, both criticisms and well criticisms since there hasn't been anything else...HAHA!

we are close minded because he wouldnt want to sign here when a big market team will throw the moon at him

Certainly the Blue Jays want to get "something in return" for Wells, who can blame them? And certainly, they'd like to come away with cheap starting pitching. That said, no team on the other side of a trade is going to value Wells as anything other than a one year rental and as such, he doesn't warrant a quality, young starting pitcher in return. Starting pitching is coin of the realm, and rookie pitchers with records like those racked up by the Marlins' Sanchez, Johnson, Olsen and to a slightly lesser degree Nolasco, are worth their weight in gold.

As recently as last week Wells indicated all things being equal, he'd like to stay in Toronto, but he won't be giving them a "hometown discount", his bottomline is a market-based rate. If Toronto pays it, that's okay with him, if not he'll be wearing another uniform next season.

As for Toronto taking less than a frontline starting pitcher, it's hard to imagine that they would give up the benefit of having Wells on the roster for lesser production. They are better off to negotiate with him in good faith in hopes of securing his services going forward than to go into 2007 without his production and in need of a new starting CFer, and if you're correct, without at least getting a quality starting pitcher in return.

Wells is a terrific player that any team would covet. But for a number of reasons the Marlins don't match up well Toronto, at least as it pertains to Wells. Perhaps other teams will have an interest, but I doubt it will be the Fish.

As for the ARod/Wells thing, one (player) has nothing to do with the other. Funny, there was article today regarding trading ARod (I think it was Newsday) that listed seven or eight places he could conceivably wind up, and even though Miami is his home, or at least that was an important premise in the piece, the one team noticably absent from the list was the Marlins. It's hotstove time, many players will be discussed but for myself, it's hard to imagine (a one year rental) Wells in CF for the Fish in 2007 when they will be beginning phase two of their rebuilding effort, looking for players who have a future with the team.

blue jays also just finished 2nd in the AL East and that is with most of their pitchers rather hurt all year. They are looking for playoffs next year not rebuilding.

To hell with centerfield! Obviously it needs to be upgraded but what we really need more

than anything is bullpen help. We can go after position players after we get someone to

replace Joe Borowski, Wes helms, Randy Messenger, and basically anyone not named

Taylor Tankersley.

Our Bullpen will be rebuilt in the spring...the Marlins have more than enough quality arms. CF is our biggest hole without any viable options in the near future, Vernon Wells is an excellent name to throw in the discussion arena. The difference between Arod and Wells are astronomical. Arod is a local superstar who has the ability to make this teams's lineup the object of intimidation for any Pitcher with the misfortune of facing it. He will bring the fans in drones. Wells is an excellent player but he just isn't Alex Rodriguez

I agree about Wells, so long as we aren't giving up too much. Blue Jays like to overpay for pitching, and having V Wells for one year wouldn't be so bad at his salary. Just needs to be a really cheap trade.

And even if he would go after one year, that would be one year with a top notch CF w/ a decent bat. Something we may not get there otherwise.

Then we would have a hole in Cf the next year

If it's enough to help us win a championship we may have an easier time filling the hole in CF next time.

If you are more concerned with a championship next year you are after the wrong Blue Jay.

They have somoene else you think would fill that hole?

Is CF alone what kept us out of the playoffs? Do the Marlins really need to overpay for an awesome CF to make a legitimate playoff run next year?

I don't think so.

Well, I have a hard time pinning losses like that blown extra inning 4-run lead on the bullpen. Having an awesome CF + another 30 HR Bat in the lineup would help. Do we NEED it? no. If Hermida had performed anywhere near expectations, if Nolasco or JJ hadn't tired out by season's end we could been making a legit playoff run this year. But those things happen, and you want the best team you can make. The only other hole we have is bullpen, and that's not going to be solved in one move.
