I must confess though, the S&W 686 isn't mine, I bought it as a present for my mom since i'm leaving for USMC boot on January 8th and someone is going to have to hold down the house, so criminals be damned, my mom is packing a .357 Magnum :thumbup . It's her first gun and she's going next week to take the class.

$590 plus tax and a $5 background check fee.

 

Are you going to be carrying? Because if you are, i'd highly recommend against purchasing a massive revolver as a first handgun. I carry one of two guns depending on my needs and the situation, if I need deep concealment and will be wearing just shorts and a t-shirt, i'll carry my small bug which is a S&W 642 .38. If i'm going out somewhere and will be wearing something more than just a t-shirt, i'll carry my Sig 229 (which is being replaced by the USP I just bought). The S&W 686 is one of the best home defense handguns you can buy, however if you're going to be carrying I highly recommend something else. If you want to stick with a revolver for carry, get either a S&W 340 or 642. Your body type will also largely depend on what type of gun you're able to carry, if you're very slim, that eliminates a lot of guns that you could potentially carry.

It has nothing to do with being paranoid and to suggest otherwise is simple ignorance and nothing more.

 

My family does not have access to my guns, I am bringing them all with me once I reach my final duty station in the Marine Corps and most of my firearms are too complicated for novices who have never so much as touched a gun before in their life, therefore I bought my mom the very simple and very reliable revolver with 150 year old technology that anyone can easily operate.

I do think that spending that much money on guns is a little absurd. I assume your family is affluent, but I still can't really fathom needing to get even more than what you have now.

 

However, I understand hobbies and obsessions, so I am not entirely surprised by yet another Accord nra thread. Just try to put things into perspective, because you just might let this sh*t run your life (if it isn't already, because it's all you ever talk about on the message board these days)

I'd say that if I were to buy one, I would absolutely become more paranoid, because every single time I heard a noise, I'd reach for my gun. That can't be good for your mental health.

I have things perfectly in perspective. You take a look at any hobby and you will see people spending ridiculous amounts of money on things that you find pointless. I see people spending $10,000 on radio control toy airplanes and spend all day and night working on and building planes and I think that's just plain dumb and cannot fathom it, yet I realize it's their hobby, it makes them happy, they have fun doing it, so why criticize them for it? This is MY hobby, I have made a lot of great friends doing it, it makes me happy, I have fun doing it, so why criticize me for it? If I had no interest in firearms but still realized the importance of owning one for personal protection like millions of other people in America, I would own probably just a simply $250 Remington 870 shotgun for the house and a small Smith&Wesson J-frame revolver to carry. But this is my HOBBY, I shoot guns for fun, I collect them, I compete with them, among other things. Why criticize me for it?

Although seeing all of the different guns you have, it could be seen as a pointless investment. Overkill, some might say.

 

I respect your right to defend your family, but there comes a point where you can't claim that every single gun you buy is solely for your protection. You don't need 20 guns, man.
