Following Friday night's announcement that second baseman Ray Durham has signed a two-year, $14.5 million contract, San Francisco has also inked center fielder Dave Roberts to a three-year pact worth $18 million. A Giants spokesman said a reported deal to re-sign third baseman Pedro Feliz -- supposedly for around $5 million -- is yet to be finalized, with the club and Feliz's agent, Mike Arias, "still talking." In addition, infielder Rich Aurilia will undergo a physical early Saturday before joining San Francisco as a first baseman under a two-year, $7 million deal. Roberts, 34, had a great season for San Diego last year under manager Bruce Bochy, now the Giants' skipper. The speedy outfielder batted .293, stole 49 bases and tied a Padres mark with 13 triples. "We are certainly thrilled to add a player of Dave's caliber to the top of our lineup," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "Dave's speed and ability to get on base can alter many innings, and adds a new dimension to our offense." On Friday night, the Padres offered Roberts arbitration and will get two compensatory draft picks from the Giants. Rich Draper is a reporter for MLB.com. December 2, 200619 yr They keep getting older From the outfield we had last year, this is going younger. Roberts is 35. With Bonds, Finley, and Alou out there last year, they had an outfield of all over 40. Randy Winn was the young buck. I like this move. Roberts is a good player. Bochy seems to get the best out of him, so I think it'll work out.

I was a bit surprised when I first heard about this a week or so ago too. I thought, for sure, they would at least give Todd Linden a shot this year.. But it looks like he'll be a 4th outfielder.
