December 31, 200619 yr David Murphy-OF- Red Sox Dec. 31 - 12:57 pm et David Murphy said he has added 10-15 pounds of muscle while working with trainer Dennis Fay at the Texas Sports Medical Center this winter. Murphy, who hit 12 homers 512 at-bats last season, would be a lot more interesting if he could add some additional power. As is, he's a fourth outfielder, and he's not going to make the Red Sox out of spring training unless someone ahead of him is traded. The Marlins have had some interest in him in the past, so it's possible that he'll be the one who is dealt. Source: Boston Globe He's still probably a trade option for us...maybe this helped his cause.
December 31, 200619 yr I will take him if his price isnttoo high. it wouldnt take much more than petit...maybe another throw in non prospect...murphy will never see the bigs in boston...so we might as well give him a chance
December 31, 200619 yr Just a reminder of what he's been doing 2005 Age 23 AA .275/.337/.430 in 484 AB, 46/83 BB/K 2006 Age 24 AA .273/.315/.436 in 172 AB, 11/29 BB/K 2006 Age 24 AAA .267/.355/.447 in 318 AB, 45/53 BB/K .826 OPS vs RHP, .752 vs LHP. Pre Allstar .910 OPS, Post .693 I don't know if that means detailed scouting reports eventually got him in AAA or if it was a flukey 175ish PA, but I don't really mind Murphy. One thing I like about the Red Sox is they are so loaded in the rotation and bullpen they wouldn't need something MLB ready to consummate a trade. Murphy only really projects to be a 4th OF so I don't really see them asking for a lot if they want to move him. I'd see if they want Harvey Garcia or Jesus Delgado back ha. I wouldn't deal them Petit. His stock is down, but he did have a 1.25 whip in AAA at 21 years old. If he stops giving up billions of HR and the K's go up a bit, he'll be a much more useful player than Murphy.
December 31, 200619 yr Thankfully he chose the Texas Sports Medical Center rather than the Brad Penny School of Conditioning where courses convene each day at a different fastfood restaurant in the tri-county area. On a serious note, what could the Red Sox conceivably ask for him? He hasn't hit for power or average, he'll be 25+ going into next season (which is not the issue here it might be elsewhere) and if his stolen base counts are even a neglible indicator of his speed he appears lacking there as well. The latter would concern me in cavernous Dolphin Stadium. But the truth I wouldn't know him if I fell over him so his stats may not tell the whole story. From a cursory review he looks like a choice of last resort, an interchangeable fourth outfielder type of which the Marlins already have two in Borchard and Ross and god knows who else will be trying to win a spot this spring. Correct me if I'm wrong but just about this time last season wasn't Joey Gathright crowing about adding muscle to bring a little more power to the plate and we saw how that worked out. It wasn't until he lost the weight and shipped off to KC that he started hitting again. And for the record, for the right price I would take a guy with MLB experience like Gathright who we know could play CF over a Murphy, but again I don't claim any expertise when it comes to the guy. Feel free to ignore all of the above. Putting Gathright and Murphy together in the same thought may be unfair, but in both cases the parent club has more OF/CF prospects/players than they can handle on their rosters going into spring training.

Gathright did try and do that, but he is a little 5'10ish guy. Murphy is huge, like 6'3, 6'4. He can probably handle the weight a little better. I wouldn't worry about his sb speed versus covering OF ground. By all indications, he's at worst a solid defender. I think Murphy would OPS about the same as Borchard, low 700s, (with more consistency in LHP/RHP making him much more useful as Borchard can pretty much not hit LHP) and provide better defense at all 3 spots. I'd trade for him just to replace Borchard, let alone start in CF. I'd offer them one of the RP prospects not in the pen already or named Owens, Vanden Hurk, or Lindstrom and see if that's enough, or if they'd want a second nominal prospect in return. Like Stokes.
