Posted January 5, 200718 yr http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/content/prin...04/c1773095.jsp Marlins agree on Minor League deals 01/04/2007 3:50 PM ET By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com MIAMI -- Several of the Marlins' top prospects will get their first taste of big-league camp when Spring Training begins on Feb. 17 at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla. Highlighting the group will be the club's five 2005 first-round draft picks, pitchers Chris Volstad, Aaron Thompson, Jacob Marceaux, Ryan Tucker and Sean West. The 2005 draft was unique because Florida had three first-round and two sandwich picks. All were used on pitchers who project to rise rapidly through the system. Even if these pitchers aren't big-league ready by Opening Day, they still could make an impact during the 2007 season or as early as 2008. The Marlins announced Thursday that they have come to terms on Minor League contracts with 17 six-year free agents, all of whom will be invited to Spring Training. Invitations were offered to infielders Joe Dillon, John Gall, Zach Sorensen, Jason Wood and Scott Seabol. Outfielders Nick Trzesniak and Alex Sanchez will be in camp. Sanchez has a chance to compete for the starting center-field job. The six-year free-agent pitchers who will be in Jupiter are: Roy Corcoran, Nate Field, Lee Gardner, Mike Koplove, Wes Obermueller, Eddy Rodriguez, Jimmy Serrano and Chris George. Two catchers -- Chris Ashby and Paul Hoover -- also received invitations. Rounding out the group of organizational players invited to Spring Training are: outfielders Brett Carroll and Alejandro De Aza; catchers Brad Davis and Brett Hayes; and pitcher Gabby Hernandez. Edgar Gonzalez is missing from this list, he should be brought back and given his chance in ST more than some of these other guys
January 5, 200718 yr Err... Edgar Gonzalez was signed by the Cards a few weeks ago, I thought this was common knowledge. Perhaps best known as the older brother of San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Edgar Gonzalez was one of 10 Minor League free agents signed by the Cardinals earlier this week. The 28-year-old second baseman excelled in the Florida Marlins organization this past season, hitting .327 over 428 at-bats split between three levels of play. Gonzalez is currently playing in the Mexican Pacific League as a member of the Venados de Mazatlan. The San Diego native is batting a solid .270 with 12 doubles and 19 RBIs over 54 games. He's also playing alongside his brother, who is currently serving as the Venados' starting first baseman. LINK

January 5, 200718 yr Author Was too busy partying during the holidays! He had a better chance with the Marlins than with the Cards. Wish him the best!
January 5, 200718 yr Wes Obermueller ... thats a name I have not heard in quite some time I saw him pitch in a Marlins vs Brewers game in 2005. If he is on, he's damn good.
January 5, 200718 yr I'm really looking forward to seeing what Brett Carroll and Alejandro De Aza can do. BTW, I'm pissed that we lost Edgar Gonzalez. He can hit just as good as Aaron Boone.

January 6, 200718 yr Hey what about Joe Dillon. They didn't invite him back last spring and he bolted for Japan where he didn't hit well but he's a utility guy with power.
January 6, 200718 yr Dillon bolted for Japan to get paid better than he would have as a AAA player, his likely fate invitation to spring training or not.

How can you even compare Gonzalez to Boone? I have to disagree with you. Gonzalez hasn't even played at the mlb level while Boone has had a decent career. Boone has 115 career hr's and a .264 average. Meanwhile, Gonzalez has been stuck in the minors this long for a reason. Please don't use the Dan Uggla arguement (Uggla was stuck in the minors too) either because Uggla is the exception and not the norm. I too would have liked to have given Gonzalez a chance at making the team but I think we are better off with Boone.
